(Bloomberg) -- Baldur’s Gate 3, last year’s most critically acclaimed video game, has brought in about $90 million since its August release for parent company Hasbro Inc. through a licensing deal.

Made by Belgian developer Larian Studios, Baldur’s Gate 3 licensed property from Dungeons & Dragons, a famous role playing game by Hasbro subsidiary Wizards of the Coast.

As you turn the corner into 2024, in the front half of the year, you’re still going to have the tail from Baldur’s Gate 3,” Hasbro Chief Executive Officer Chris Cocks said on a call with analysts, adding that sales will persist through the year, but at a slower pace than the third and fourth quarter.

On Monday, Baldur’s Gate 3 reached 500,000 reviews on PC game marketplace Steam, which were “overwhelmingly positive.” The title has sold millions of copies across PC, Xbox, PlayStation 5, and Mac. It won 2023’s Game of the Year award at the Game Awards.

Update 3/20

Hasbro exec says Baldur's Gate 3 "proved for us that people really wanted great D&D games," supports Larian's plan to "take the time we need"

Never knew hasbro connected to baldurs gate 3
Baldur’s Gate is a franchise based in the Dungeons and Dragons IP that Hasbro own.

It is the same with The Witcher where CDPR needs to pay royalties to the IP owner (the Polish autor).

Or Sony paying royalties to Disney/Marvel with Spider-man IP.

Weren’t they looking to sell the D&D brand recently?

Edit:

That rumor always seemed to be based in forum posters' dreams more than reality to me. In a way it makes sense, Hasbro is an ailing toy company and can sell this non-core franchise in order to raise money to bet on its own ability to succeed as a toy business. But it also doesn't make sense (selling a very profitable part of the company whike keeping its less viable aspects.)

Edit:

This is the type of stuff I would buy if I was a gaming publisher. There is just so much synergy between D&D and computer games.

The success of Hogwarts and Spider-man shows that stuff like The Lord of The Rings gaming rights were worth a lot more than the $400m embracer paid in the hands of a publisher that would put high quality devs to work on it.
