Celebrating the one-year anniversary of God of War Ragnarök

Mark the milestone with more hilarious Midgard Mishaps outtakes, a lo-fi music playlist, player stats, and more.

It has officially been one year since the launch of God of War Ragnarök. Since the very first time this game was announced, the support we felt from fans has been truly incredible. It has been a pleasure and a privilege to see players finally get ahold of the game and create so much wonderful conversation, content, and community around it.
As a thank you from all of us at Santa Monica Studio for your continued support of the games we make, we put together a few things to celebrate God of War Ragnarök officially turning one-year-old!

God of War Ragnarök Lofi Beats to Journal to

Join Atreus in the Realm Between Realms for a chill session of journaling, working, or beating up monsters. Featuring a mix of three tracks, you’ll recognize familiar songs from Bear McCreary’s iconic God of War Ragnarök and God of War (2018) scores with LoFi spin.

We’re thrilled to be able to partner with the talented Alex Moukala (assisted by Lawrence Ravagnan) for the musical performance and the wonderful team at Spud Gun Studios for the animation on this piece.

God of War Ragnarök – Midgard Mishaps 2

A sequel to the first Midgard Mishaps we released after the launch of God of War (2018), this misadventure through game development captures some of the unintentionally hilarious moments that emerged during the creation of God of War Ragnarök.

A special thank you and shout-out to the QA teams at Santa Monica Studio and PlayStation whose work helped keep these mishaps out of the experience we were able to share with fans one year ago.

One Year Later Infographic

You all have been keeping Kratos busy in the Nine Realms over the last year. From comforting Best Girls Speki and Svanna to besting Valkyrie Queen Gná, we wanted to celebrate a selection of your many accomplishments in God of War Ragnarök.

Community Showcase – Combat Experts and Speedrunners

Whether doing no-hit Spartan Armor run or trying to beat the Berserkers as fast as possible, the God of War community has a ton of talented creators who have dedicated themselves towards mastering the combat with finesse.

Learn more about what it takes to be some of the best in the world at God of War’s combat in our latest community showcase.
Once again, we want to extend our gratitude to all the fans around the world who have shown support for God of War Ragnarök. It means everything to our team at Santa Monica Studio to be able to continue making games we love for players who enjoy them.
This last year has been truly amazing, thank you.

I loved it overall except the pacing of the area where you meet the girl (forgot her name) but bosses, combat and story were overall sublime.
The game is so huge, I didn't mind that section. I had more pacing issues early where minor enemies were crushing me. I played on hard because normal felt too easy, but it forced me to learn the combat mechanics through punishing trial and error. I almost didn't stick with it after clocking like 50 deaths on the first Daugur hole.

I play every game on hard, normal is too easy and never an option for me.

No sales update yet?
Yeah I think that comes across as odd. All the "engagement" metrics comes across as very "Xbox." It also reminds me all of this data is collected, which is such a strange thing to want to know IMO. Seriously, tracking minutes petting dogs tells you what for the product?

I mean what's the issue? We knew in Feb it sold through 11 million, it's a success either way, no matter what the numbers are now so I don't think thts Sony hiding them.

Well sales slowed down a lot and Sony hasn't been price aggressive this gen with their games as they were last gen. But I'm sure we'll eventually get one probably next April is my guess.

Hopefully, I'm just hoping it did really well. 11 million was already excellent....

Well we can extrapolate from the last two quarters and kinda have an idea-ish... 4.7 million first party games last quarter and 6.6 million the previous quarter.

I'd guess it's around 13 - 15 million now

Sounds about right, If it was approaching 15 million...I think that is really great. Very respectable.

What I'm afraid of, is that the PC ports cut into the tail end of sales along with the higher basic prices making people wait longer and longer for a sale.

(I know sometimes I sound like a broken record about PC ports)

No I agree about the PC port impacting sales and I feel it kinda softly impacted Spiderman 2 as well. But, they've made their beds unfortunately.

But it's def the lack of price promotions this gen that's keeping sales a bit stagnant for some Franchises

No issue at all, I just think posting about engagement metrics by Sony is goofy. It doesn't mean anything. Again, those kinds of things tend to be used by a certain other company when they have nothing good to actually report. Reminds me of people committing indentation and white space changes to code repos. :p

I'll give you an example from the actual slide. You're saying at least 11 million copies sold? So they posted 1.5 million minutes comforting the dogs. Well if you know the sales, let's say 11 million, and you do the actual math as an average per copy sold that works out to .... 8 seconds per copy. So on average people gave the dogs pets once?

Who the hell cares? Again, the number "1.5 million minutes" JUST to pet some dogs or whatever sounds impressive at first but at the scale these games sell, when you break it down it's a completely meaningless statistic.

So yeah, I'm not criticizing the game, or the sales. I'm wondering why Sony is going down this road of posting meaningless stats that don't stand up to 20 seconds of scrutiny. I think the point is made by Bryan blowing past all those numbers and asking "any sales updates"? Which is really the only metric that counts.

I don’t know what you’re complaining about. This isn’t the first time Sony did this.

I’m literally just commenting on Bryan’s remark. Because you know, this is a discussion board. It’s not a complaint.

Also saying, “I don’t know why you’re pointing out this is dumb. They’ve been dumb before,” doesn’t make much sense to me either. I don’t know every piece of marketing Sony puts out, and I think this kind of “engagement” marketing is not meaningful so, yes, I took the opportunity to say something.
