Chrono Trigger 2 is unlikely to ever happen, creators say

Yuji Horii, Hironobu Sakaguchi and Kazuhiko Torishima praised Sea of Stars saying that it is a beautiful game and also looks just like the classic RPG. The news came about as the trio were interviewed and asked whether there was a possibility of Chrono Trigger 2 which they replied that it would be unlikely.

• Horii said “Wow, they did a great job, it looks just like Chrono Trigger… it’s beautiful… that’s great!”
• Torishima said it was nostalgic
• Sakaguchi said “Look, its the same!… When I saw it I though they really did their best and did a great job”

And it is a direct sequel happening 20 years after the original following one of the timelines in CT.

It was more like an spin-off. I'd make a Chrono Trigger 2 with either FFVII Rebirth like visuals, top tier cel shading or 2DHD visuals, having the same characters than Chrono Trigger as direct sequel and an artistic direction that mimics the original game and its Toriyama illustrations.

It is actually a very direct sequel... 20 years after the events of CT with direct characters roles.
But as CT talks about others dimensions/timelines you can have others sequels like Zelda following another timeline/dimension.

The issue is that some timelines has not good story to be told at all.
