Exactly what I suggested.

DRS and unlocked frames are so vital here.

Every console game coming out should have fidelity unlocked frame rate modes as this will make them more future proof.

They should also have DRS modes for 30,60, 120, even if they're hidden.

What we currently see with Fidelity locked at 30 or performance modes with features from the fidelity mode locked out are unfortunate at best, lazy at worst.

Well timed and powerful new hardware is going to be more and more important to maintain momentum in the console industry I feel.

The best way to deal with the unfounded outrage is to normalize new hardware by doing it more often or routinely.

Well as long as it's good so won't I mind it... I like new and powerful hardware though! (y)

Powerful hardware is an albatross around the neck of the current industry. In 30 years of gaming I never thought we would be at a point where graphics looks good enough and more power doesn't add much, if anything, to games. 1440p looks mint, 1080p with bells and whistles still looks great.

Will the normies take a 1080p console, cheap as chips, with perfectly good looking games, over an £800 cutting edge PS6 that struggles - due to lazy Devs, to show off the super graphics of games.

If a company Launces a next gen console that tops out at 1080p@60fps sold for £200, they'll mop up the industry.

I think it is increasingly difficult to do longer and longer console generations without a mid gen refresh as base models fall behind advancements on PC.

The reason why console generations are getting longer is because of diminishing returns with technological advancements each generation and the amount of time it takes to make games. A game that starts development after the launch of a console could bifurcate the generation, whereas before you could maybe get 3 games from a franchise in one generation. You're lucky now if you can get 2.

New hardware helps us in tremendous ways. Bringing AI upscaling to consoles after PCs have had them for 6 years is massive. Otherwise there would have been a 10 year gap between PCs getting AI upscaling and consoles... AI upscaling investments will transform both cloud and handheld gaming.

I think many people are genuinely salty about the price, but the realities of the industry haven't dawned on them, but they will soon with the announcement of the Nvidia 50 series and with the announcement of the Switch 2. I think the cheapest Switch will 400 dollars, but I think we're looking at a more expensive SKU and we have no way to deduce accurately what that 2nd SKU might even look like.

The cheaper SKU might be the Switch Lite and the Switch 2 that is dockable might be 500+ dollars and still be weaker than the Xbox Series S... We just don't know yet.

But what's the point of newer and powerful hardware, if there are only few games making use of it?

Where did you get the idea that there were only a few games making use of it?

The vast majority of PS5 games will be improved by Boost mode and by launch there will probably be 60-70 games that get PS5 Pro enhancement patches. Ignoring things like annual sports games almost all the major PS5 games are getting enhancements with a few bewildering absences which could be addressed any day.

There are fewer games that won't make use of the PS5 Pro than there are that will.

I'm not talking about the Pro, I'm talking about shorter cycles for (inevitably) smaller increments.

Nope, he is making a proposal to counter the current outrage caused by the Pro pricing.

He can clarify himself, but I took it as him saying midgen refreshes need to become the norm so people don't get butthurt over them when they come out. If they do it every generation, it becomes expectation even more than the norm.

This is only the 2nd time sony has done a midgen refresh. It's likely the 3rd generation to go over 6 years and each generation has lasted at least 7 years since the PS3.

So again, not sure what you were referring to in terms of shorter cycles.

Exactly, talking about future iterations. Might be Pro, might be multiple Pros in a longer gen, might be shorter console cycles in general.

Add to that cross-gen, and no hardware will be fully utilized. Sure, you will see improvements because of brute-forcing, but all of that won't have the impact a game built around the strengths and weaknesses of a defined set of hardware would have.

Not sure I would want new console too often. Maybe skip 4 years in pro and move to 5-6 years cycle rather than 8?

Not sure honestly.
