We all know Jim Ryan's motto was "we'll let the games do the talking" - and he used that to absolutely slash the marketing team at SIE. But we see right now a mostly unopposed battle on SNS to uncritically praise Xbox and uncritically defame Sony games - several tweets about Spider-man 2's supposed "bugginess" have run rampant garnering millions of impressions, with no marketing team to correct the record. While no one cares about isolated groups of fanboys on the internet, the anti-Sony sentiment has been leaking into mainstream media which does have a chance to influence popular opinion. Do you think we'll see the next leadership try to seize the initiative back in the media/online discourse space?

PlayStation's marketing has been more successful and expensive than ever during the Jim Ryan period, their games sell more than ever.

A couple fanboys, shills or trolls complaining on Twitter or gaming outlets are nothing compared to the more than 20 million people who buy the game. There's no point on wasting effort on them because they don't mean anything in the total picture, where they are only a tiny fraction.

And well, it's impossible to make everyone happy: different people have different tastes. Some people love the A feature/genre and hate the B feature/genre. And the opposite: other people hate the A feature/genre and love the B feature/genre.

As an example, in this forums we continue see -supposed- PS fans hate against GaaS. But then we saw today a ranking of the top 10 most played PS games and 9 out of 10 are GaaS.

I think they should not hire astroturfers though, @Yurinka my friend already do enough work.
Hey @Bryank75, I'm tired of reporting trolling and insults with no results. Starting the next time instead of reporting I'll insult back and things will turn ugly.

Sony are marketing where it matters, in no way has marketing been slashed, maybe in some areas they could market a bit more like psvr2.

None of the FUD has effected sony at all, and i'm sure they know it so aren't going to waste effort fighting a pointless battle.

They should really re-launch the Kevin Butler & friends stuff but do it as a meta campaign across social media. Have Kevin Butler be the fake CEO of SIE.

Basically if you've ever heard of/played SEGAGAGA!; do something like that, but IRL online, engage with actual press/media and fans but in the context of being a parody of corporate gaming culture while still, y'know, delivering actual information about SIE-related gaming projects and initiatives.

And taking the piss out of Microsoft, themselves, and even Nintendo from time to time would just be icing on the cake (or more specifically, the fandoms surrounding them).

Why do you care what people say online? The most important aspect is where Sony has always delivered. The games.

It would be cathartic to see them dunk on the fanboys and shills, but ultimately the internet is not real life. The BS you see on social media has not made Playstation less successful.

It’s a lose-lose situation for Sony sadly. There’s no proper way to address the fanboy lies without looking like the bad guy. Xbox is so irrelevant which is why they can align themselves with the most toxic and insufferable fanboys and no one bats an eye. But Sony actually has something to lose so they have to remain super professional and stay above the condone war nonsense.

As much as I hate seeing these lies spread, it’s smarter for Sony to just ignore them

I'm not talking about hiring astroturfers. I'm talking about getting a marketing team consistently doing the rounds on the interview circuit providing outlets like IGN or WaPo or Gamespot with B-roll or marketing materials and screenshots and developing a relationship where these outlets can't side with Lbox astroturfing campaigns without risking losing the scoop to a competing outlet.

Excuse you? I dont need to excuse anything, you heard what I said and it's the truth. Everyone isn't going to vibe with everyone's views. Ppl have opinions! And thts OK. A few feel Sony are making bad moves and others feel it's bs and thts what forums and discussions are for. Everyone will not feel the way you feel

This right here.

We don't need an army of astroturfers. We don't need bots.

We just need a PS3 era marketing team. A team that'll engage with the community in a non-toxic manner and dispel issues or worries.

Example. There was a big uproar when it was discovered that the PS4s CMOS battery would die and render the console unable to play your owned games, both digital and disc. Sony fixed this. How was it discovered? people just accidentally did. That was a perfect opportunity to come out and say they listened and fixed the issue. It's free PR. They did nothing.

That's what needs to change. A team that will engage with the media when needed instead of letting issues fester and get blown out of proportion.

They also need to communicate their intentions more.
