It’s awards season once again, and Elden Ring has left God of War Ragnarok behind to claim the highest number of Game of the Year awards in the year 2022. Several awards have yet to be added, though given the large gulf in the number of awards given to both games, it’ll highly unlikely that God of War Ragnarok will even the odds, let alone pull ahead.
Going by the current tally, Elden Ring is the clear victor, with a total of 119 Game of the Year awards, out of which 110 are from media outlets and 9 are based on reader votes. God of War Ragnarok comes in at a distant 2nd place, with a total of 23 Game of the Year awards, out of which 21 are from media outlets and 2 are based on reader votes.

Elden Ring’s momentum hasn’t come close to slowing down, as the game is reportedly set to receive a whole slew of DLC content, of which the Colosseum is merely the first. Well-known enthusiast of From Software titles Lance McDonald took to Twitter to share that the Colosseum DLC update that Elden Ring recently received is the first of a series of planned content for the title. He added that the Colosseum DLC is called “DLC1” internally, and it was planned to be the first DLC since before the game’s release.

McDonald also mentioned that he’ll be able to talk more about what happened with this DLC behind the scenes, referring to his earlier comment about it being, in his opinion, the worst DLC that From Software has ever released. He added that, for now, Elden Ring is in active development, and fans should remain confident in From Software’s ability to deliver.

Yeah, feel like GOWR deserved to be a close 2nd at the very least, it was my GOTY and I played both pretty extensively and loved them.

But that is the way it is... being multiplatform certainly gave ER an edge for the awards season.

I realized that after Santa Monica didn't push the graphics to PS5 level.
It was the only think that Ragnarok lacked :( everything else is really splendid... really a missed opportunity to make maybe of the very best games of all the time.

Said that Elden Ring is not a graphic looker too... the difference I guess is that you expect that form a GoW game and don't from a Souls game.

Not for me but no surprise here. Elden Ring is basically the BOTW of Souls games. Congratulations to From Software. Perhaps one of these days, they'll actually release a game that I want to play.

No the difference is one is a new IP and has the freshness factor

Also was a lot of peoples first time playing a Souls game

Elden Ring also stood out against alot of poorly designed open worlds that were giving genre fatigue

Horizon Forbidden West would have won GOTY 2021 easily (no competition at all) and GOW Ragnarok GOTY 2022 if not for Elden Ring.

Ragnarok is still getting 2nd place, everyone else is very far behind.

Horizon FW released this year....

Just look at the massive upgrade in ambition from FROMSOFT's previous games to Elden Ring. A world much more massive than they've ever created, more bosses and enemies than ever before. Weapons, skills, playstyles, new moves... horse riding..ect.

Souls-like games are already favorites to win the award any year they release, but you take Souls-like and add open world to it... and you're hitting another MAJOR demographic of gamer that loves both those styles of games individually, and when combined it exponentially increases the chances.

God of War Ragnarok was fine, but the game does have some issues.. and quite frankly, as others have said.. it just didn't push ahead enough technically and ambition-wise. Don't get me wrong, it was a lot more of what you already loved... but certain things held it back.. so ER was the easy favorite to win.

I know but I meant if the release was in 2021 as planned it would have won easily against It Takes Two (lol). Now HFW is not in the conversation because people are voting for GOW instead (and GOW is also getting overshadowed by ER).

Bad luck for Sony this year 😕

Congratulations to fromsoft. I'll never play their games because I hate being frustrated, but they'll probably do just fine without me.
