Are Japanese people into PS+ or something or have they completely moved away from digital games on PS5?

How do you sell 52,000 consoles and no software? What are people using their ps5 for in Japan??

Yeah software sales look weird.

Hardware sales are holding very nicely, but what the hell are these people playing? We need digital numbers atleast to make a bit more sense.

They are playing PS4 games? What else?
People ties too much to TOP10.

If outside the TOP10 or TOP30 you have 50 games that sold 1k each then you have 50k units of software sold to PS5 in this week.
Plus there is digital that is bigger than 30% in Japan already... probably near 50%.

I use an example with TOP30 of last week where PS5 had 2 games:

09./04. [PS5] Final Fantasy XVI # <RPG> (Square Enix) {2023.06.22} (¥9.000) - 4.904 / 401.376 <80-100%> (-43%)
25./20. [PS5] Street Fighter 6 <FTG> (Capcom) {2023.06.02} (¥7.990) - 1.759 / 49.367 <80-100%> (-34%)

The last game in the TOP30 sold 1603 units.
After that how many PS5 games exists in the TOP100 or TOP1000... how many sold more than 1k?

That can esily breaks 100k units in a week or even more.
And there is digital not tracked by Famitsu.

What I see in Japan is that big titles are not selling like before but that doesn't mean that smaller titles is not selling constantly.

I called FF16 dropping out this week in last week’s topic. Still surprised to see it actually happen.

I would say PlayStation needs to step it up for Japan considering FF16 was the biggest next gen launch so far for them. But … meh Japan’s gaming market not so relevant to console space anymore.

Retail charts will not tell you the compete picture of what any gamer is actually playing anyway.

Can you look up the top 10 games on psn with Japan set as the location like you can with other territories?

Theres not much more they can do to step up. Its up to 3rd parties to put out good software just like in the past. SIE never really contributed much to Japan software sales, it was always, Konami, Capcom, SE, Bandai, Etc.

If the Japanese audience isn’t interested in what the 3rd parties are putting out for home consoles than it is what it is. Sony is not going to build some AAA japanese rpg studio which sells like a 1.5 million copies in japan and 4 million copies ww lol If Square Enix can’t do it Sony def can’t do it.

Just gotta let XDev Japan do its thing

PS5 reached 4 millions faster the PS4 but keep dooming 🙄

Yes and FF16 was number 1 best selling until Remant. It's now number 2.

I can’t get the link to work as it just launches my app instead. Not necessarily looking for sales but more so a player activity metric. People were asking what Japan plays and that newest chart should help provided insight in such. Quite curious to see if Japan does play online games. We would likely assume not as much as other countries but ehhhh I wouldn’t be surprised.

We still worried about physical charts when we know a majority of software is sold digital. Didn’t capcom and koei just report 80 plus percent digital rates?

People only focus on Nintendo games but look at that chart and compare it to even 5 years ago. For a system with 30 million units that top 10 is low. Especially is you consider switch is more skewed towards physical software.

That includes digital only titles and worldwide.
West digital ratio is way bigger than Japan.
Japan in recent titles are variating between 30-50%.

The TOP10 is indeed low compared with old generations.
And of course there are way more to the TOP10 like if the others 90 games sold around 1k then it is 90k units that is very close to the TOP10... I guess the TOP10 is around 20-30% of all physical sales so there are around 70% of physical that we are not aware of it.

software sales are fine, the only games that stay in japan charts for multiple weeks are nintendo. but you see with multiplatform releases like with Crymachina, that the software split is pretty close for the switch having a much larger install base than PS5.

SE gives individual country break downs in their fiscal reports. Japan has been about 60% some quarters. Either way physical chart still only represents 50% of market and doesn’t take into account any money spent on MTX and DLC.
