Kadokawa Corporation has acquired Octopath Traveler series developer ACQUIRE from GungHo Online Entertainment, the company announced.

“To strengthen the ability to create IP in games as part of our game business strategy, we have made ACQUIRE Corp. into a wholly owned subsidiary,” the company said in its earnings results for the three months ended December 31, 2023.

“By acquiring the company, which has produced million-seller hit titles, we expect to generate synergies with our existing game-related subsidiaries, strengthen our planning and development capabilities Groupwide, and enhance our lineup of console games.”
ACQUIRE was founded in 1994, and develops and markets original game titles for consoles, as well as engages in contract development. In addition to the Octopath Traveler series for Square Enix, the company also developed the Tenchu and Way of the Samurai series, which are owned by Kadokawa Group subsidiaries FromSoftware and Spike Chunsoft, respectively. Its most well known self-published series is Akiba’s Trip.

It's so under the radar I'm sure ppl don't even think about it tht way but your right
Its smart of Kadokawa as they’ve had a working relationship before.
And as much as Octopath has some haters, its a great great and great looking too.

Square would of been smart to get them to remake the older FF’s like 1-5.
Sony too for some smaller, cheaper JRPG’s. Especially if they want to have a portable in the future

Yep. As usual…. Wouldnt break the bank either.

According to some Sony should only make AAA new IPs because it makes big money, and not create studios or buy them
They don't seem to learn anything from Nintendo.

It's great to have as many big AAA games as possible but there is no reason to not also have high quality AA and smaller projects, Sony used to be great at this in the past and these days they make it pretty clear that they mostly don't care.

They need these smaller titles in Japan and for the world between there big releases. Like many from PS studios. Especially for the Japanese gaming market.
While staying here you notice it.

PS3 and early PS4 had a good lot of smaller titles.

Maybe a AAA JRPG studio is not an option but why not something like this? Same work for horror games and something like Bokeh Game Studio.

It's extra funny when you consider that these smaller titles are pretty much the only are where even MS fins some success. During the PS4 gen Sony started to only care about games that they believed could sell 10m+ units.

OH hell nah we need those Helldivers, Journeys, Kenu, etc games just as much.

Yes. And the Resoguns, Stray’s, Gravity Rush. And lot more Japanese centric games too.

Isn’t the Journey developer making an exclusive for PS5?

If a company is about to get acquired, it would be unusual for them to do new acquisitions.
Maybe specially after the upcoming Xbox collapse, regulators will be more harsh with Sony regarding allowing them to make acquisitions.

So in order to avoid issues with regulators, Sony could help close partners (like Kadokawa) to make such acquisitions (like Accquire) and secure their content with some deal. Like the one Kadokawa and Sony already signed some time ago.

With Nintendo and MS out of the home console business Sony wouldn't need to make certain acquisitions. Only Nintendo with the portable console market would be an indirect competitor, because there are the PC stores there and the only one who pays for exclusivities (only in PC, not blocking console releases) is Epic, where Sony also invested a ton of money so they won't fuck each other.
