A couple of weeks ago we got wind that Lenovo was working on a PC handheld along the lines of the ASUS ROG Ally. It seems like some marketing photos have surfaced that show the device in detail:

details:
  • Switch-style detachable controls, possibly to enable different controller layouts in the future, or detached gameplay
  • Small bezels on the top and bottom of the screen
  • Kickstand on the back
  • Back buttons on both controllers
  • Touchpad on the front of the right controller

Detachable controllers is a kiss of death for me. Would not consider on that alone. But I like the single trackpad and the tiny bezels.

I seriously cannot find an argument against detachable controllers. Why don't you like them?

They make any device feel like wobbly shit. I want a handheld to feel solid like it's carved out of a single block of glossy black magnesium. The Steam Deck feels generally great but I can still flex it a bit, and the matte plastic chassis is not impressive compared to the PSP or PS Vita. The Switch is D-tier trash. The joycons ruin that system. Plus they are terrible controllers.

So what are we doing here? Ruining the system for 90% of user time so that 10% of the time you can have an even worse experience. I get Nintendo wants 7 year olds to be able to play Mario Kart together with pads that feel like 3rd party NES controllers, but that's not for me.

Looking good. Seems more ergonomic than the joycons and also has extra buttons.

What I don't like is that the dual analogs aren't located in a symmetrical positions, because as most human beings I have symetrical hands.

Detachable controllers is a kiss of death for me.
Detachable controllers are perfectly fine for me. I have a launch Switch and never had any issue with them. In fact, I never even had drifting issues.

Drift is related to the analog stick mechanism. I'm talking about how the whole unit feels to hold. The joycons significantly flex/wobble on both sides. Maybe it doesn't personally bother you, but it's a fact. My switch isn't defective, they're all like this (excluding Lite units).

I had drifting issues three weeks after purchase but that's actually a reason for me to want detachable controllers so in the future if any drifting or buttons mess up I can just buy a new one

Uh, I never noticed it. But I understand what you mean. My main issue with joycons is first the tiny buttons, too small to my bear-like manly hands, a shitty dpad an the lack of ergonomy which sucks to play during long sessions.

That's a good point, but they could fix it making controllers with decent quality to avoid driting or button issues.

Another nice thing of the joycons is the customization, and also allowing you to play with the console docked while not needing a long cable.

I'm actually pretty excited they went for the detachable controllers. I thought Valve should have done the same thing with the Deck, but my main concern was the analog sticks eventually drifting.. and Valve at least was smart enough to make them easily replaceable.

Still though... this has potential.

I love this thing mainly because of its larger screen. It looks like 16:10 8", probably 1920×1200.
It that's a high refresh rate OLED with VRR then it's worth over 1000€ and many people will gladly pay as much for it.

My only hesitation comes from the release date. If this is releasing in september then it's acceptable, but if they push it towards the end of the year or early 2024 then it'll be too close to the first handhelds with AMD's Strix Point. At that point it's competing with devices that are 50%+ faster like Asus' 2nd gen Ally.
We might even start seeing premium devices with Strix Halo which is basically a PS5 level SoC at 25-30W.
