Intel will be producing custom chips, designed by Microsoft for Microsoft, as part of a deal that Intel says is worth more than $15 billion. Intel announcedthe partnership during its Intel Foundry event today. Although neither company specified what the chips would be used for, Bloomberg noted today that Microsoft has been planning in-house designs for both processors and AI accelerators.

The chips will use Intel's 18A process, which has been a big part of its road map since the company brought CEO Pat Gelsinger back to turn things around. The company is counting on its chip foundry services to put it back on top of the chipmaking world, and it seems that Microsoft will be the first major customer for this project.

Wonder if AMD will give Sony preferential treatment now? Who does Nintendo use?

It would be really exciting if they did this. Intel's Arc GPU initiative had a rough launch but the hardware design is strong. Their ray tracing and AI features are significantly ahead of AMD. Putting Arc in a console would be a great way to boost developer support and rapidly iron out any remaining kinks.

Why would they? This has nothing to do with consoles or videogames.

They're partnering with Intel to develop custom AI chips that they'll put in Azure servers.

this won't be for consoles.

Now that Intel is on the GPU market for real, this was bound to happen. Maybe we get Intel APUs on PC eventually. Intel arc GPUs turned out to be really decent once their drivers got better.

Arc isn't that decent. They are underpriced vs the hardware bom cost, intel is losing money on units sold. Just look at the die area being used vs comparable performance nvidia and amd cards.

They already had it, always made them customized for them with stuff they asked for.

Who does Nintendo use?
Whoever has the cheapest price for more or less they need. In case of Switch, Nvidia. Due to BC reasons, it would make sense to use Nvidia again for Switch 2.

I think is more likely that they'd use these chips for servers, AI or tablets. And that may plug an Xbox controller to the sides of one of these tablets and call it their next Xbox.

They are power hogs, that's their main negative, and bad compatibility with some legacy games. Even some current ones like Starfield.

And well, can't blame them with that dumping strategy to try to gain share fast. If battlemage is great, it will put some serious pressure on AMD. Nvidia is safe on the high end.

They are power hogs because they take a lot of die space. The power consumed is directly proportional to the number of transistors used.
