Around the world, industry regulators continue to scrutinise Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision, prompting Microsoft to remind the EU’s European Commission that PlayStation are still the gaming market leaders. As reported by Android Authority, the European Commission is wary of the deal.
In a press release, the European Commission wrote, “The Commission’s preliminary investigation shows that the transaction may significantly reduce competition on the markets for the distribution of console and PC video games,” adding that they were particularly worried that Microsoft would “foreclose access” to certain games. In other words, make them exclusive.
Replying to this, Microsoft told The Verge that Sony is still “the industry leader,” seemingly conceding in the so-called console wars. Truthfully, Microsoft could just be saying that to push the deal through after recently confessing that they didn’t expect it to face so much scrutiny.
