Monster Hunter World is enjoying a monstrous resurgence on Steam this week.

Return To World and the Monster Hunter Wilds reveal drummed up enough collective hype to push World past 100,000 concurrent Steam players this week - for the first time since its last update back in 2020, I should add. Steam Database estimates that the game hit a 24-hour peak of 113,000 concurrent players, and it’s regularly dipped over the 100,000 mark throughout this entire week.

I'm pretty sure it's 'popping off' on other platforms too, they just don't list the player counts for games publicly (a stupid move IMHO). It's weird sometimes when these kind of articles come about to make Steam seem bigger than it actually is relative to the consoles, and they're usually written for console-specific games (or games with roots on the consoles).

Just something you tend to notice over time, y'know?

Japan putting in work when it comes to certain Capcom titles.

The base game right now is #22 on Steam on the Global List
But if you go and look at the Japanese Steam best sellers list you see

MHW Base Game #3
MHW IceBorne Edition(Base game + Expansion) #4
MHW IceBorne Expansion #7
MHW IceBorne Digital Deluxe Edition #17

We see a similar pattern with Street Fighter 6 in which has has been Top #10 in Japan(most of the time Top 5) pretty much the entire time since its release on Steam. But if you look at at the global list Like right now SF6 is #79.

Monster Hunter and SF are the two most Japanese centric(and also Asia centric) franchises right now when it comes to their bigger IPs.

Rankings mean less than nothing without sales numbers.

Steam in Japan is as much of a non-factor as Xbox in Europe.

It should show up in December’s engagement charts for PlayStation. It’s not charting on XBL tho.

World was the first big online co-op game on consoles since Destiny launched. Wilds is going to be a monster.

Definitely hyped. I never got to iceborne but I played the fuck out of MHW.

This hasn't been the case for a number of years now. A few years ago, I would've agreed with you. PC gaming used to be a very niche thing in Japan beside a brief period in the early-mid 90s, but it's made a surprising resurgence in recent years.

This is especially not the case for publishers who have courted the PC space by providing functional ports over the years and/or are already very popular inside of Japan like Capcom. We also have Harada from Bandai Namco at a PC panel at TGS this year, saying that Elden RIng and AC6 sold 40% on PC in Japan.

There's a reason more Japanese publishers are now doing PC ports, even those that do not necessarily do big amount of sales outside of Japan.
They would not be doing these ports if the market was not there.
