Less than two weeks after Nvidia jumped Apple in terms of its overall valuation, the GPU maker has now passed Microsoft to stand as the world’s most valuable company based on the chips it makes that are key to powering a boom in generative AI technology.

At the close of trading on Tuesday, its share price stood at $135.58, up $4.60 from the previous day and pushing its market cap to $3.335 trillion. That’s more than Microsoft ($3.32 trillion), Apple ($3.29 trillion), and Google ($2.17 trillion). Nvidia’s shares split 10-for-1 after June 7th, lowering the overall share price, but the spike in the company’s value has been jarring. Its share price has gone up 160 percent in 2024, and the company only passed the $2 trillion mark in February.

Just weeks after overtaking Apple for the number two spot, Nvidia is now number one on the list, worth $3.335 trillion.

Don't know why either would be valued so high. Two terrible companies

That's the point, shareholders are happy that these companies(Nvidia/Microsoft and others) are going to bring us into the new AI frontier. The rich shareholders are loving the potential future where no companies they invest in is going to need employees and they're doing record profit because costs are going to be low.

Nvidia is great at what they do. I remember being in college an finding it absurd that AMD didnt bother with so many AI tools requiring Nvidia cards, turns out that it was a huge mistake by AMD.

NVidia bet on AI early on and now it's paying off.

No one but shareholders and Nvidia executives should feel happy about these news.

One company gobbling up all the AI craze revenue out there isn't something that will play out nicely for the market.
