Overwatch 2 Pride event blocked in certain countries

Pride is finally coming to the Overwatch 2 universe in the form of a special event featuring map makeovers, cosmetics and other goodies.

However, while the Overwatch 2 team is proud of the event they cooked up, not everyone will have access to the content when it goes live, but for a good reason.

During an interview with Dexerto, the Overwatch 2 devs revealed methods to protect players in countries with anti-LGBT laws from participating in the Pride event on June 1. According Senior Game Producer Brandy Stiles, all Overwatch 2 Pride content will be “opt-in” to give players the choice to express themselves or not.

“We have tech in place to limit this content from going out to countries that have laws that aren’t tolerant of LGBT content. This helps us protect those players.

Furthermore, players in countries that are not LGBT-friendly won’t be able to even opt-in for the Pride event due to laws in place in those countries where such content isn’t accepted.

Our values are to protect players. We want to protect players around the world. You can equip a cosmetic in one country and travel to somewhere else with different rules and get in trouble. So we feel like it’s our responsibility to help protect people like that and follow the laws in countries that we operate in.

Not rare, many AAA games have location based changes, localization and censorship to appeal the different regulations of the countries where they are released.

Not only with LGTB, but with level of violence, nudity, etc. And not only censorship related stuff, but also changes to better localize cultural specific meaning of certain colors, sentences, etc.

I think setting this as an "opt-in" for everyone is great, more companies should do that for their seasonal changes.

edit: I really hate the current bastardized version of the gay pride flag though. Morons, don't they get that the rainbow was already supposed to represent everyone. You don't literally need to put a black stripe on for black people, just as the green and blue stripes aren't there to represent green and blue people.

On the upside this means that I can buy regular rainbow stuff for my kids without wondering if I'm sending a political signal to strangers, maybe even arouse some for the bad reasons.

So that new flag is just amazing at this level.

On the other hand I recall reading and hearing that the rainbow represented everyone. My guess is that a few people took it too literally and they just thought that every possible identity had to be literally on the flag. So expect more shapes and colors to show up as time goes.

These days I just take these flags as warnings for stuff to avoid.

The curse of the leftist is that nothing is ever good enough and they'd rather fracture themselves infighting over achieving the unachievable ideal. So even if they come up with something that's perfectly rational and everyone would theoretically support, they have to ruin it by trying to go further. Like, most people would have supported a $15 minimum wage (besides, of course, the corporate forces that rule right now). But now I see they're trying to say $25. Like...dude, please stop hurting your own causes.
