Persona 3 and 4’s re-releases are actually native new-gen ports, but only on Xbox consoles.

As reported by Gematsu(opens in new tab), Atlus has finally issued a comment on its query from earlier this year.
It turns out that when Persona 3 Portable and Persona 4 Golden launch in January 2023, native Xbox Series X/S versions of the two games will actually be available.
However, it appears the PS5 won’t see native versions of both Atlus RPGs, for some reason.
Atlus has apparently yet to clarify to Gematsu why Persona 3 and 4’s new-gen ports will only be available for Xbox consoles, but we know PS5 users will have to play PS4 versions of the two games instead of new-gen versions.
At least PS5 users will be able to enjoy a native version of Persona 5 Royal later this month.
This is particularly surprising given PlayStation’s history with the Persona series.
Persona 3, 4, and 5 all launched as exclusive to whichever PlayStation platform was available at the time, and Atlus fans never even questioned whether their beloved RPG series would one day come to other platforms.

That all changed with Persona 4 Golden, which first arrived on PC back in 2020. Now the floodgates have effectively been opened, with Persona 5 Royal coming to PC, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch platforms later this month, and Persona 3 and 4 arriving on the same platforms, plus PS4, next year in January 2023.

All things considered, it certainly seems as though Xbox might well be the best place to play the Persona franchise, a sentence we never thought we’d type out. Persona 5 Royal arrives on new platforms on October 21, and Persona 3 and 4’s launch is slated for January 19.

We could also be looking at a live-action Persona 5 adaptation, as Atlus previously hinted at earlier this year.

lol this is the most boring timed deal.

I own the originals and even I don't give a fuck if that shit is on PS5...I mean, if you are playing on PS4, what are you even missing? Who cares? The ports are so old, I just don't see the need for me to jump for joy about a PS5 version of such an old title, so those aren't "next gen versions", they are merely ports lol Thats like Ubisoft coming out and telling you the AC2 remaster will have a "next gen" version for Series X but NOT PS5, as if some massive difference was going to be spotted lol So the PS install base has already played the fuck out of those games and I don't know how many fans really care about the differences from PS4 to PS5 regarding this, especially with that horrid Persona 3 PSP port.

Crazy how much sega has shifted in xboxs direction.

He who pays gets the......

All business. It's what it's. It's Sony's job to analyze publisher relations and decide whether to throw their dick weight around to get a publisher in line or not. Sometimes you simply tolerate a few disrespects... like EA at the beginning of the previous gen.... until EA got smacked down by Sony and were later begging with apology tours at Sony's conferences with their execs front row next to SIE's and free games (trying to repair the "relationship").

Relationship with Valve on the other hand has been handled badly till this day from the lows of the PS3 era - sheer stupidity. Mostly carrots and very little stick.

Is persona 3/4 really going to look any different on Xbox one vs series x? It's not really a graphics powerhouse of a game.

What did you think was going to happen once they announced the strategic partnership for Azure cloud?

This is really just more a reason why I think Sony need to partner with Google for cloud going forward; the MOU with Microsoft Azure should just be left in the past. As long as Microsoft can continue to leverage Azure cloud for 3P devs and pubs into their workflows and development spaces, you WILL see more "unique" benefits like this trickle down to Xbox & GamePass platforms, at the loss of PlayStation platforms.

It's smart business on Microsoft's part, but Sony can't match them in those types of deals if they're a client of Azure as well. Just realistically isn't possible. They do need to ensure they can compete in some way with Microsoft on the backend services assisting 3P partners in software development, particularly WRT cloud, and honestly their best chance at this is through getting a sweetheart deal and striking a strategic partnership with Google. They would both stand to massively benefit in multiple ways anyway, it just makes too much sense.

I'm not perhaps necessarily surprised this is happening with Persona; when MS & Sega first announced that Azure partnership I was thinking (hoping) it would've meant some new exclusives for Xbox similar to OG Xbox getting PD Orta, JSRF, Outrun 2 (initially), GunValkyrie etc. Well, they killed that hope almost immediately, but I suppose going forward we might see various games (particularly ones with very big audiences on PlayStation & Nintendo platforms) get preferred treatment in terms of optimizations and extra features on Xbox platforms. That really just shows the strength of Microsoft's Azure division and how that really can present a big challenge to companies like Sony going forward if they don't take the opportunity now and secure growth into that space in the future with a company that isn't directly trying to snuff them out of the market as a platform holder.

I expect this is a timed exclusive like the lack of a PS5 version of Yakuza 7 outside Japan.

Weird flex.

I don't think it's outright impossible for Sony to start their own storage / cloud server. They could start a new service for "parts" of their network and try to grow it from there. There's a big upfront cost, but they have the means to pull it. The problem is getting it to Azure / AWS point.

I do agree that partnering with google would both harm MS and benefit google themselves. Win Win.

Aren't they doing PC versions? Wonder if it's just because of that cross development kit thing or whatever where you do one "version" and then can target XSX/Xbox one.

I dunno; companies like Microsoft and Google were bigger than Sony when they started a push into cloud globally, and they're much bigger than them now which has helped them to exponentially increase their rate of growth in the sector. I just don't see how Sony can compete with that on their own without partnering with someone already established in that space.

Which is where the Google partnership would come in because as you said, both companies would get a lot out of it. For Sony in particular, it'd be much cheaper than trying to scale out a cloud server network across the globe at Azure-like capacities solely on their own.

Maybe. I just don't see how it's so hard to provide those same benefits on PS5; the PS5's SDK APIs, AFAIK, are very similar to PS4's. So it can't be that complicated.
