Phil Spencer: We’re Not Growing the Market with $1000 Consoles

In the same Bloomberg interview, Spencer gave a subtle dig at Sony's controversial pricing of the new PlayStation 5 Pro console, saying the market won't grow with consoles that cost $1K.

I feel pretty good about where this industry is going. To reach new players, we need to be creative and adaptive of new business models, new devices, new ways of access. We’re not going to grow the market with $1,000 consoles.

The basic PS5 Pro costs $699, but if you add the optional vertical stand and the disc drive, the price increases to over $800. That's twice as much as the launch price of the PlayStation 4 Pro, Sony's previous mid-generation console refresh. The PS4 Pro included a disc drive (but not a vertical stand).

In every interview, he always finds a way to take a jab at Sony.

Technicaly you can, because it appeals to a niche audience that would want higher quality alongside the ease of use that consoles provide, and wouldnt buy the weak, standard console otherwise. (Mostly PC gamers, but also people who are willing to upgrade)
Of course, the pro doesnt make sense NOW, as the PC gamers already have your games, on PC, so why buy a pro lol

The entry point is going to be lower than hell, so to that end ya, I’d rather the $1000 console than this charity where everyone is able to participate.

It's Xbox that is most desperate to make money from everywhere... and he calls this desperation move as "growing the market" :ROFLMAO:

Maybe.

Could also be just shutting down xbox fanboy hopes of a hybrid powerful console.

I think this is it. I know Spencer, el al. have made comments in the past that Xbox is going to continue to invest in hardware...but I just don't see it. I think they will probably get out of the hardware business entirely in a generation or two.

Phil knows nothing about console and video games market growth. Hardware or software. Look at Xbox numbers sine 360, hardware and software sales. Not good, now look at it without spending close to 100billion on acquisitions, theres nothing there

He doesnt have an opinion that holds anything, might as well ask a pizza maker.

Sony isnt expecting huge market growth with the pro, its an option upgrade for hardcore fans. Like the head of PS has said now.
He’s said
A.) They expect it to be like PS4 Pro
B.) They know its for enthusiasts

So why does Phil need to give his negative take on something he has zero idea on?

While this could be a dig at Sony, it has more to do with the impending tariffs that's going to be implemented by Trump which is going to cost companies more money for products/tech coming out of China and Microsoft/Sony aren't going to take losses anymore so if a PlayStation 5 Pro is $700 now, I wouldn't be surprised to see it get a price increase next year once the tariffs go through.

He's not wrong, though. The PS5 Pro is a flop. There is a ceiling on the amount of money most people are willing to invest into a game console and I'd say once you get north ~$600, you've reached it.
Is it?

Sales wise it seems to be doing pretty well.
If there is market to it why is it a failure?

Do you think Ferraris are failures too?
