Enough doom and gloom. Let's talk about how nobody in the industry is doing it like Sony
2024 has given us Helldivers 2
In 2023 it was Spiderman 2 over 10 million
2022 it was God of War Ragnarok
GT7 was said to be on track to surpass GT3 (14.89 million) so may very well be in the 10 million club for 2022 as well
Forbidden West was last recorded at 8.4 million and should eventually get to 10
2021 has Miles Morales - 14 million
2020 they launched The Last of Us 2 which hit 10 million as of September 2022 and Ghost of Tsushima which was 9.7 million in 2022 and should have hit 10 by now
2019 just missed the mark with Days Gone at 9 million
2018 saw absolute juggernauts like GOW 2018, Spiderman easily over 10m. Even Detroit hit 9 million
2017 was the year of Horizon - over 20 million and GT Sport - 12 million
2016 saw Uncharted 4 deliver 16 million
That's 7 franchises hitting over 10 million
Most publishers in the industry hang their hat and entire identities on a franchise hitting 10+ million. Xbox haven't done it since Halo 3. That's the sort of success publishers dream of and Sony does it over and over again and still want more
Ten years ago Sony hitting 4-5 million was big time for them
These days only Nintendo are hanging with Sony in this regard
I don't expect this success will stop any time soon. In the coming years new IPs from Santa Monica, Naughty Dog should continue the trend. Further potential of breakout hits like Concord. Wolverine is basically a lock for this sort of success. Bungie will launch Marathon and other new games under Sony's banner and be added to this pantheon.
