Just a heads up to anyone who has a pre-order in. Sony has started processing payments. So be sure you have the funds available to avoid missing out. I’ve seen in the past people not receiving emails and was unprepared. Just a quick PSA

Me too, my purchase depends on how real that "PS Link" technology is. If it actually makes a noticeable difference or not
You might already know this. But ps link only really comes into play with wireless audio.

And only headsets that are support it will work.

I could be wrong but I thought I read somewhere that PS Link will also reduce remote play latency and give a better experience than just playing on a phone/tablet.

Can't remember which outlet it was, I think either ign or CNET that thought that by mistake.

It's basically only used for supported wireless headsets to help with audio latency.

I just listened to the CNET review and at 2:34, he says "it was described as remote play turned to 11 - it optimizes the connection since they control hardware on both ends". That's a huge bummer if it isn't true and only applies to audio.

I would of needed this before my travels, but probably not so much when I get back home. Will probably buy eventually.
Any idea if it could be connected to phone data?

As I remember, PS Link reduced the latency for the audio only (in headsets or earbuds that support PS Link).

What would improve the latency in general of Remote Play (video, audio, input) is the tech of the recently acquired company iSize.

Regarding the PS Portal hardware, maybe (or maybe not) has less latency than using a random relatively 'old' or 'not high end' normal phone, tablet or PC depending on the tech specs of each device. If they really designed PS Portal choosing its hw specs to get the best possible streaming experience, it should have the same wifi6 and -if PS Portal uses it- Bluetooth 5.1 than PS5 (or better), which could be better than the ones in your phone/tablet/PC. PS Portal could also have a low latency display, lower than the average phone/tablet. It may also have -like PS4 or PS5- a dedicated hardware decompression chip, freeing hardware resources getting a bit of extra latency reduction more.

But as I remember we don't know these specific PS Portal hardware specs and it's possible that they could have chosen to put lower specs to keep its price as low as possible.

Im guessing that tech isn’t gonna be in the portal?
I have no idea.

Maybe it's already there and in PS cloud gaming, and Sony bought them because it would be cheaper for Sony and would provide them extra benefits in other areas.

Or maybe Sony still didn't implement the tech in Portal/Remote Play/PS cloud gaming and they'll add it in a future firmware upgrade.

In any case, the previews say that the latency is good, at least with the Portal relatively close to the PS5 console. We'll see in final reviews when using it in the real world, with interferences at home, more distance and a wall or two in the middle etc. because this can be good but won't do magic since wifi has its limits.

Sounds good if it can be added with a update
Can it be connected to the phone data/hot spot?

I mean I have no use for it close to the PS5, but when traveling Ill use it

PlayStation Portal uses Remote Play to stream from your PS5, so as when using Remote Play with other devices, you will be able to connect to a internet wifi and stream from your PS5 even if you are outside home. Meaning, you'd be able to connect it to your phone's wifi to use it.

But obviously if you are far from home, the quality would be awful and unplayable, specially when using the internet of a phone line and in games that require quick reactions. Remote Play is mostly designed to use it at home, or when you are pretty close to your home (as could be in the same city, using a good internet connection in both sides).
