This is coming from Giant Freakin Robot, so take it with a grain of salt. Reportedly, Constantin Films is planning to reboot the Resident Evil films again and this time will adapt Resident Evil 4. Their sources claim that it will star Leon Kennedy instead of Alice, which shouldn't be a surprise after Welcome to Racoon City already rebooted the series away from the Anderson-verse.

Resident Evil Wiki couldn't verify this report, but they claim that Constantin Films has multiple projects in the works (which has actually been confirmed since last year).

Speaking of cancellation, will there be a new season of the Resident Evil series somewhere, now that Netflix has declined to re-up it?

We can’t tell you at the moment what we’re planning, but it’s no secret that Resident Evil is the biggest and longest-running franchise our company has ever had.

MOSZKOWICZ We still have big plans for Resident Evil, with this universe of characters. We’re working on various projects at full steam. Resident Evil is by far the most successful franchise that Constantin Film has ever had. So just because one series didn’t get renewed, doesn’t mean we’ll throw in the towel.

My thoughts:
I'm glad they're rebooting, if this is true. Welcome to Racoon City was an amateurish mess of random Easter Eggs stitched to together with an incoherent plot, atrocious takes on established characters, and even worse production values. It was a glorified fan film and a shaky foundation to build a franchise on.

If you're going to adapt Resident Evil 4, a reboot is also required. In Racoon City, Leon was a grossly incompetent rookie who got the job through nepotism and was useless throughout the film until he found a rocket launcher laying around by chance. Would anyone believe this guy as a badass government agent one movie later?

Hopefully they get someone less trashy than Paul WS Anderson and Johannes Roberts to direct. A story with as many locations and action set pieces as Resident Evil 4 also requires a decent budget.

They have to get a good actor for the main few characters, someone that feels premium and really about the craft of acting as opposed to a model that is just basically eye candy for whatever audience they are targeting.

They could really make something out of this if they have the right frame of mind.

If there are passionate people behind it, I think that is a great start.
