Spotted by Twitter user @bogorad222, Saints Row’s community and social media manager on LinkedIn revealed that the game sold 1.7 million units.

Bad phrasing is my guess.
The game sold 1.7m copies sold but since the players count wasn't over 2M he wrote 1M.


Edit: Now that I've looked around, it was given for free on EGS for a 24 hours period.
So I think the players is for people who redeemed the game outside of the actual paying customers.

They managed to fumble this so hard is an achievement in itself. With no GTA or any other competitors on the horizon this should'v been an easy slam dunk.

Almost all GTA Like games (Saint's Row, Mafia, Sleeping Dog, Watch Dog, Crackdown, Driver, Just Cause) are all falling apart commercially.
It's really suicide to try and follow in Rockstar's footsteps.

I would question even those 1.7 million units.

More likely, that guy has access to some dashboard that counts the number of keys being activated and that number probably reaches 1.7 million very easily if it's counting all the activations from when the game was offered on PS Plus and on the Epic Games Store during 2023.
