Speaking with DreadXP, Bloober Team's Chief Marketing Officer Anna Jasińska has been asked about the game and how it came to be. Apparently, Konami invited the Polish developer alongside others to Tokyo Game Show 2019, asking them to prepare a concept for a Silent Hill 2 remake. Bloober's concept is the one that, according to Chief Marketing Officer, "stole Konami's heart", and made them recognize the studio's passion and commitment to horror.

The idea of working on this project stalked us for many years, and in 2019, we received an invitation from Konami to participate in the Tokyo Games Show. To our delight, Konami asked us to prepare a concept for a remake of the original game’s second installment in exchange for the opportunity of bringing the concept to life. Of course, we weren’t the only contenders. Many other studios were vying for cooperation as well, but in the end, our concept was the one that stole Konami’s heart. They recognized our commitment and passion for horror, and that alone was an enormous distinction for us.

We are focusing on bringing the distinct, visceral atmosphere back in the modernized Silent Hill 2. Longtime fans shouldn’t worry about us “missing the point” while we’re livening up the title. We faithfully stick to the traditional story canon while remaking the gameplay and updating the graphics from the ground up. These are the reasons why Konami entrusted us with the remake in the first place.

A big visible change is the adoption of an over-the-shoulder camera, which altered the perspective of a few iconic set pieces, but also meant an overhaul to the combat system. The latest technological achievements do wonder when it comes to making the visuals pop. As you see, we are not straying away from the original concept of making this cult classic; we just have some ideas on how to make the peculiar scare factors more appealing to the contemporary audience.

I wouldn't take these interview statements too seriously, because most of Bloober's interviews about this game have just been pumped with buzzwords and flowery language. They haven't been able to describe the philosophy behind any of their creative decisions.

For example, the original game used a combination of third person camera and surreal static angles to reflect the mental state of the protagonist (and to enhance the atmosphere):

Bloober Team claimed in the Transmission that they copied Resident Evil 2's camera because it's "more immersive" (whatever that means), but in this interview, they admit that the real reason was to appeal to the largest audience possible. 🙄

Likewise, in these interviews, they can't even properly explain why they wanted to change the dialogue and creature designs. Instead, they claim that they "modernised" the monster designs and dialogue, even though both of those aspects are timeless.

Yeah, you sure "modernised" the Bubble Head Nurse by adding stockings...

And if you keep looking passed the buzzwords, Bloober Team actually admits that they're making tweaks to the story and adding their own fan fiction content.

They all start off reassuring, like "Don't worry, we're being super-faithful, blah blah blah," but then in that first interview, Bloober Team talks about how they're tweaking the script, adding story threads, and how doing a remake instead of a remaster allowed them to change certain things and "sneak in some visions of our own." They also admitted point blank that they're not remaking the game faithfully, they're remaking it how they remember feeling when they played it for the first time.

We've also known for a while that Bloober Team is adding several new endings to the game, and we saw in the trailer that James Sunderland is basically a totally different character now, both of which are pretty egregious changes by themselves.

Even in this interview, where Bloober's PR gives the sound bite about "respecting the canon" of the original game, she gets asked directly in a follow-up question if the game will make any significant changes to the story and she dodges the question.

Definitely don't give Bloober's flowery claims too much thought. Try to look at the substance of what they're saying instead. This game is 100% their reinterpretation of Silent Hill 2. I'm not sure why they're semi-hiding the fact that they put their own spin on it.

Yeap seems weird but adding things or changing things is not necessary bad.
Let's see how it turn out.

Of course my expectations with Bloober is zero... Konami is basically cheapping out the development instead to give these titles to a studio that really knows what to do.

Where it’s at.
Bloober have issued a statement saying “While we have a deep respect for the original, we fully intend to tighten the graphics up on level 3!”

You really shouldn’t be.

Bloober saying Konami chose them is a huge red flag. Nobody left at Konami gives a fuck about games, and Bloober make lousy games.

This is like hiring McG to remake Prince of Darkness.
I really did enjoy The Observer tho
