Sonic the Hedgehog boss says the PS5 Pro justifies its $700 price and could allow for newer games "that can express the speed of Sonic”

Speaking to IGN, Sonic Team producer Takashi Iizuka admitted that $700 is generally "really expensive" but reckons it might be worth it for "high-end users" willing to drop the cash. "The price isn't something we feel it's appropriate for us to comment on, but in terms of the capabilities, we think that it's definitely worthy of the Pro name. So we're excited to see what it can do," Iizuka said.

Sonic Team isn't currently working to give any of the Sonic the Hedgehog games a PS5 Pro enhancement - or, at least, it hasn't made any such announcement - though Iizuka is still excited to see what's possible with the "high-end machines" in the future. "Coming out with those consoles, we feel that we can make newer Sonic games that can express the speed of Sonic and with much better gaming UI as well," Iizuka notes, although he's still committed to the people playing on older hardware like the PS4 or Switch.

I mean this isn't quite an endorsement, it's lipservice and that is coming from someone who is excited about the PS5 Pro.

At no point does he say the price tag is justified here. In fact that quote is it would be inappropriate for him to comment on the price.

The PS5 Pro isn't going to transform how games are designed this generation. That's not the point of a mid-generation console. What it is going to do is let those of us who want to play on console, play without as many concessions.

This is only possible because games have becoming scalable due to their architecture. You couldn't do this on PS1-3 because all of the programming was so specific to the hardware down to the timing. It's why it was difficult to get real gains out of hardware based emulation.

That combined with a time period before games could be patched is why consoles were more limited back then.

You can now patch a game to take advantage of improved hardware and you can do it easily.

Well as long as Sony makes it worth it so don't I mind mid-generation refreshes like the PS5 Pro etc. with more advanced hardware/software than how it'll be if it was $500 or less. But again it must be worth it and then so will I be fine with the price as long as it's worth it! (y)

He would still need to make the game work on the base PS5, so his comments are odd. Still, the Pro is worth the price.

SSD is the same as PS5.

Unless I’m reading what he is saying wrong.

I don't think we should worry about the CPU (jumped to 3.85GHz) and the SSD (2TB here). It's still smarter with 4 command simultaneously vs 2 in top PCIe m.2 SSD's. Also the cache and RAM is shared unlike traditional x86 so it's semi-ARM.

PSSR makes way more room for the GPU when most games are GPU-bound. So far we saw much better performance.

But Sonic games have been made with the Switch in mind so far

Sonic died with SEGA MegaDrive to me. After they went 3D they never made something appealing. Rayman Legends shits hard on all recent Sonic, and this is from a person who grew up playing Sonic games and beating them all back in early-mid 1990's.

PCIe Gen 5 NVME SSD's aren't compatible with Zen 2 CPU's so I don't see how the PS5 Pro SSD would be different
In theory Zen 2 controller can reach 7GB/s… so there is a small room of speed compared with 5.5GB/s from PS5.

But the SSD is probably the same… so no increase.

Exactly yes... But I won't be surprised if it's still 5.5 GB's/s though like the PS5/PS5 Slim even though I wish it was more.

I wouldn't be surprised if the 2TB SSD has improved caching.

I'm still finding it hilarious that people are saying the 2TB drive isn't a worthwhile upgrade and so many PC comparisons stick with 1TB. I don't know anyone who maintained their stock storage with the PS5, nor do I know anyone who got a quality 1TB expansion for less than 100 dollars.

Microsoft set their 2TB XSX to 600 dollars for a reason. Market value, 100 dollars for an additional terabyte of storage is well within reason.

You start off the PS5 Pro at that same 600 dollar value (or 550 if you're focusing on digital). So the question is whether the performance gains are worth 150 dollars for the 4 years it's going to be the market leader in performance. The answer is obviously yes.

The biggest question for the PS5 Pro is going to be the RTX improvements. We're not going to see much of that with older games, we're going to see more of it with games that have yet to release since their projects haven't finalized. I think we'll see a handful of old games that improve RTX, especially if they have included them on PC already, but the future is going to be the test.

Can the PS5 Pro deliver fidelity at 60 with RTX... Sony really hasn't put as much emphasis on that "Big 3" element as much as the beefier GPU and PSSR.

I expect that will change with Death Stranding 2 and Ghost of Yotei.
