This released on ps5, ps4, xbox series S/X, xbox one and pc, I dont think 1 million is some achievement to brag about. If they cant hit 1 million even after releasing on so many platforms they might as well leave the industry

Sony's marketing is doing WORK

It's selling as much as a mega-hyped 3rd pillar Atlus JRPG 😲

Sega finally woke up.

Metaphor is a certified flop unless it cost less than 50 million to make, I think even outlaws sold more and we know how that turned out for ubislop.
I've never seen such a huge celebration for these measly sales. About 300k after 2 weeks. You would think it sold 5 millions the way people lost their shit.

Franchise/Studio fans get mega hyped for "fastest selling" announcements.
There's a reason SEGA has done that for Like a Dragon/P3R/Metaphor.

The fact that SEGA is happy to announce that tells us how cheap these games are to make tbh.
Plenty of those SEGA series have survived many years with a fraction of those launch sales due to less platforms/JP release before translations in past entries.

Outlaws probably cost like 150M+ like all the triple A open world games nowadays.
On top of the licensing fee to Disney and very likely a portion of each copies sold as well.

The break even point for these games isn't in the same universe. I can't imagine how far in the red that game is right now.

No way was Metaphor that cheap. It was made by their A team for up to 7 years. The budget was similar to Persona or SMT or even higher because of inflation.

It is indeed not good but not because it released in more platform... 1 or more doesn't matter for sales... more platforms gives you options choose where to buy.

But the issue here is that it looks to have a lower launch than the previous games launched in 2022.
Sonic Frontiers did 2.5 million in a month... and I doubt this game will reach 2.5 million until end of November.

There is another point... this collections have 2 games where one is a remaster and the others is new.

Metaphor is doing really good for a new IP.

BTW you guys talking about development budget of Atlus games?

I mean even the recent Persona didn't have the budget like western productions.
They run in a very old engine.
Anybody that play their games knows it is PS3 level graphics with enhancements (same engine).

And if you believe Sega they said they development budget of their games in 2023 won't broke $70 million.

If you want an Atlus game that actually underperformed, look to Soul Hackers 2 (another game Atlus wanted to be a "third pillar") and Tokyo Mirage Sessions.
Neither of those broke even 1 mil
Soul Hackers 2 indeed flopped hard.
Methaphor sales are like double of Soul Hackers 2 in Japan at launch but what killed it was western sales that were even worst.

BTW this was what Sega said about the game.

Q: Please tell us how you evaluate the situation of new titles released in Q2.

A:
Although “Soul Hackers 2” is currently struggling to reach the expected sales level, we believe that it is a title that can be sold over the long term, so we will continue to update the game in the future with the aim to expand sales.

“Two Point Campus” is compatible with multiple platforms, including subscription services, and has achieved a record number of users and user evaluations, however the sales volume is weaker than expected. We will aim to expand sales in the same way because of the game’s high quality and the high user feedback.
And no... it didn't sold over the long term :D

And "Two Point Campis" is one of the example of games that suffer with Gamepass model... it reached record numbers of users and evaluations but didn't make the money from sales lol

I don't think there's any real data out there on the budgets of Atlus titles, but people should keep in mind that the only studio in Japan that makes AAA JRPGs is Square Enix

Obviously it wasn't as cheap as RGG games or P3R but Metaphor is probably cheaper than what we think even with the very lengthy development time. For sure the biggest budget of a game for them though, just by looking at the different credits for Atlus games and comparing this one.

Anyhow, you know who's going to ship/sell 1M+ copies in the first few days? Square-Enix with DQ3 HD-2D Remake.
They're going to clear that in Japan only, lmao.

The new content is fairly short, this was a much smaller project in scope than Sonic Frontiers.
I'm sure it made a profit already, the only thing we don't know is if SEGA had higher expectations, perhaps due to Frontiers.
We won't know anything about that until the next earnings' report though.

That is true...

Anybody can see that looking at Persona and FF games.
I love Persona games but the production value is way inferior to any FF game (excluding spinoffs like WoFF).

The first Persona game I played I have a really shocking moment when I thought I was playing games from PS1 :D
Today I understand their budget are lower and so they can go pretty next-gen like Square Enix.

How are these companies expecting to launch their games in subscription services AND still get sales?
