The Akuma release plus this and other extras (big gameplay rebalance, costume 3 for the season 1 dlc characters, music track editor etc) caused a huge peak in Steam CCU, to the point that almost broke the launch CCU peak record: it was only under 400 CCU away from achieving it:

I agree. An update of how these Season 1 end additions and changes affected to the game, compared to similar games to get context of how it is the king of the genre:

The peaks traditionally mean imporant game updates that introduce cool stuff, in case of fighting games normally new characters.

As we can see SF6 is considerably more successful than SFV on Steam regarding active userbase, outside peaks the stable userbase is like 10x bigger:
image.png

Tekken 8 has a smaller PC userbase and worse user retention than SF6, as we can see its line decreases over time while SF6 kept it steady or even improved it over time:
image.png

But Tekken 8 is still performing better than Tekken 7 regrading active userbase, still is around 9K daily CCU when Tekken 7 despite having better retention had around 4K daily CCU, so I assume Tekken 8 won't go under that:
image.png

Guilty Gear Strive has a stable 2.5K-3.5K daily CCU with frequent peaks of around 10K and beyond.
image.png

Mortal Kombat 11 has a consistend 2K-4K daily CCU even after the MK1 release, which in recent times had 1.5K-2K daily CCU outside peaks:

Aprox. DB FighterZ had in the last half a year 1.5K-2K CCU, in the past had 2K-4K CCU. KOFXV is sub 1K, in the past was 1-2K.

SF6 was the first of the big trio of Tekken/MK/SF to release their newest title, it was also the most balanced with the most stable launch with the least issues. SF fans do be eating good for the most part with this game.

Yes. They also announced that this SF6 2nd season will have more frequent rebalancing, won't need to wait a whole year for a big rebalance.

I assume this will further help the game retention keeping it more fresh for players in general and also keeping happpier the more top/pro players.

Yeah I saw that nugget at their random JP streaming event. It's actually good that they sat on their changes for longer and did not apply bandaid nerfs/buffs early on like Tekken and MK has done and let the meta sit in.

Now that they've done a huge pass of balance, they'll be able to more accurately target outliers.

Both Tekken 8 and MK1 did their first balance patches super early in the lifespan of the game and that causes issues like completely killing certain characters and whatnot because they went too hard.
I assume this will further help the game retention keeping it more fresh for players in general and also keeping happpier the more top/pro players.

Pro players love to complain and while tier lists and balance really doesn't matter for anyone not in the top 1%, they do dictate a lot of the public sentiment so you've got to keep them relatively happy so that they don't influence the lower levels with negativity.
In general you know the balance of your game is great when all of them are complaining about different things, which means they've really got nothing to rally against.

My bet for season 2 characters:
  • Sean: after becoming an internet whatsapp sensation on during a trip to Africa, he got convinced by Rashid to go back to fighting with King Cobra as nickname
  • Fei Long: Netflix killed the martial arts movies, so he got bankrupt and became a criminal that now works for Neo-Shadaloo in the shadows
  • Crimson Viper: she was retired from being an agent but notices via one of her onlyfans customers that Shadaloo is coming back via NeoShadaloo so she goes back to investigate
  • Neoshadaloo's gorilla: She's non binary or lesbian and her pronouns are unga and bunga

Yes, they always complain for this or any other current or past game.

But later you see that even if they complained all day about JP or Luke being too broken, then you see Ken winning Evo, Blanka winning Evo Japan or Juri winning the Capcom Cup.

The game is super balanced even at their level as can be seen looking at the character representation in the top positions (like top 16 or so) of the major tournaments.

I assume this big rebalance may have fixed many of the people complained about, but later they'll complain about some remaining stuff, or other things they introduced. Whatever Capcom does, they will complain about it.

But in reality, when you go to check the game stats, even if splitting them by rank and looking at the top players, you see there that there isn't even a 7/3 difference between characters, the maximum is 6/4. Which means that the game already was so fucking balanced in the first season.

And being the first one, they'll iterate on top of this, so will keep getting better and better. The game right now is the king of the fighting genre, but it will improve beyond this.

I think the World Tour tease stuff is probably a strong indication of certain characters returning and a possible new one making its debut based on nationality.

I mean, it's not 100% confirmation, but I've never seen more blatant teases ever.
I would be super surprised if this was a total misdirection.

You nailed it in the last part. SF6 is such a system based game with the drive system that lower tier characters can totally do damage because it isn't the end of the world if some of their buttons are ass. There's none of the olden days where one particular matchup is just so absurdly stacked against one person at a high enough level.

Also, buffs do work. Lily won Combo Breakers just now. Low tier specialists who got buffs right now probably have a huge edge because a lot of other competitors have a lot less practice against their characters.

Speaking of which, another test of the new changes is going to happen next weekend at DreamHack Dallas. This is because Saudis are giving 8 qualifying spots for the Esports World Cup event.

I mean look at this stacked list of names for a non-FGC/non-Capcom Cup event like Dreamhack:

The power of a 1 million prize pool and $300k for first place.
Sportswashing has hit the poverty FGC(it already did last year).

Bought at launch, I've hardly played, didn't like the structure... don't like the easy mode for people.

But I'd like to try Akuma.

Is the event any good?

What do you mean by the structure? I think the easy mode is ok for newbies, but I prefer the classic one.

The matches between modern and classic are pretty balanced. In mid or high level there's some people who uses modern (a small minority), even in pro tournaments, but you don't notice it and isn't any issue.

But I'd like to try Akuma.

What do you mean about the event? The Battle Hub one fighting Akuma? I only played his arcade mode, I still have to do some of his moves/combo tutorials (the ones I'm skilled enough), his World Tour portion of the storyline

Yes. There are many references to many non-SF6 characters in the World Tour, and some hint that some dead one could return, I did all the non Akuma World Tour content.

As reference, Charlie Nash was resurrected in the past and Bison got resurrected twice by moving his soul to new bodies. Plus Gouken which was supposed to be death they retconned the story in SFIV to say he wasn't.

So they can bring anyone they want back even dead characters, they are very flexible wih this. I mean, in SF5 when Rose was talking about future events (pretty likely SF6 ones, so she may end be included in the game) where it was hinted that she would time travel to the past.

After these images she says "I'll have to start all over again... from zero" (fun fact: Street Fighter Zero, Japanese name for Street Fighter Alpha, is chronologically the first one in the series).

So they could even bring Chun's father, Goutetsu, younger versions of the current characters or whoever they want.

Regarding the Giant Attack event, it's a nice detail but just a curiosity: there are some special arcade cabinets where you fight against Akuma at the hardest difficulty so mostly kicks your ass.

By doing so you get some points even if you lose. Then you spend these points making hadokens to the huge -very cool and spectacular- Akuma hologram to slowly decrease its health bar in a combined effort with the rest of the players in a colaborative effort. I assume once all players combined defeat that bar there will be some special reward.
