The Nintendo Switch has achieved an incredible feat in Japan’s gaming market by selling over 32 million units, making it one of the most popular and commercially successful consoles ever. The console is now only 962,063 units away from dethroning the current best-seller in the country, the Nintendo DS, which has sold 32,990,000 units.

Here are the top 3 best-selling gaming hardware in Japan—all three spots belong to Nintendo.

  • DS – 32,990,000
  • GB/GBC – 32,470,000
  • Nintendo Switch – 32.027.938
The Nintendo Switch was released on March 3, 2017, and is a hybrid console that can be used as a portable device and docked for home console use. It has gained popularity among gamers worldwide due to its versatility and the ability to switch between handheld and traditional home console setup modes. The Joy-Con controllers offer various playing styles, including handheld play, a conventional gamepad feel, and local multiplayer experiences.

Globally, the Nintendo Switch has sold over 132 million units, making it Nintendo’s best-selling home console to date and the third-best-selling game console worldwide, trailing only behind the PlayStation 2 and Nintendo DS. The console’s success is significantly driven by the strong sales of Nintendo’s first-party titles, with seven games each selling over twenty million copies, including hits like “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild,” “Mario Kart 8 Deluxe,” and “Animal Crossing: New Horizons.”

and all i hear from these executives is how the console market reached a peak and they need to expand to PC to be able to grow the business, how can Nintendo top the PS2 and possibly even surpass it by a big margin (if Nintendo continues to manufacture the Switch for the next 5 years and lowers the price of it, it's possible it may surpass 160 million), but Sony finds it difficult to break the 150M mark?

Lol, not even this article can bother to pretend that lumping GB and GBC together is right.

Normal, Switch got the Nintendo handelds + Nintendo home consoles + Sony handhelds market and they are a very pro-handheld market.

And well, if they add GB+GBC sales then they should also add PS4+PS5 sales, PS1+PS2+PS3 sales and PSP+Vita sales.

Breaking records for a thing some people say will be dead in a few years... well done.
This post makes no sense. DS got that record from Gameboy almost certainly at the end of its life too. Thats how math works, you break the record at the end of your career, not at the beginning of it. Messi today has more goals than he did five years ago despite not being as good a player.

Yep, Switch truly a monster in Japan.
I'm sure a couple of Japanese publishers are kicking themselves for underestimating the platform and not being agile enough in development to have ports of it for their games. But to be fair, a lot of people were not expecting much out of Nintendo after the WiiU debacle.

Still a very exciting time for Nintendo fans, every day is getting closer to that reveal just like it was in 2020 for PS/Xbox.

Nintendo's next quarterly earnings report is on Feb 6th and a direct of some kind within the next 2 weeks is more likely than not. These events will most likely be the last Nintendo PR that doesn't mention the Switch successor.

to me, with real exclusives PS5 could've been that platform to top the PS2, because contrary to PS4, the PS5 begun the generation with a very strong first party lineup

Yeah, killing their home consoles forever. Talk about phyrric victory. During the PS2 timeframe Sony had the PSP and PS3 as well.

PS4 could have easily done it if they released a budget version of the PS4 like the PS2 slim.

Not sure why 150 million Nintendo Switch users is a shocker.

It is a 2 in 1 hybrid console to suit the home and handheld market.

They at one time had 100 million Wiis and 150 million DS users.

If anything Nintendo has lost users too.

Surpass by big margin? It needs 20M. What s forecast 4 this year? 10,12?
It ll probably happen but no way by big margin.

Moment switch 2 releases it ll be dead in the water. Their teams re likely full force nworking on s2 titles.

with the release of Switch 2, it's possible that for the first time ever, they lower the price of the current Switch model below 299, and hardware continues to sell YEARS after the release of a new one, that's the only way PS2 got to sold 158M, it continued to sell even with the PS3 on the market, and by the time PS4 came out, they were still manufacturing PS2s

a lot of people have this elitist vision that just because a new product is on the market, the old one just becomes non-existent, it may be true for rich first world countries where buying a game console is as easy and accessible as buying food, but for merging countries like India, China, BIG in population, they will still buy the old hardware if the price goes down, Sony made a HUGE mistake not discounting the PS4 to 149/199 after they released the PS5, they could be selling millions of PS4s to this day.

Sony made the decision to kill off the PS4 as they needed to mass produce PS5 with supply chains shutting down and China going into deep lockdowns. The plan pre-covid was to kill off PS4 quickly and mass migrate PS5 users over however that blew up in their faces... So they eventually went back and produced more PS4's a year later.

yeah and they had the audacity to sell them for 300/350 dollars, the literal same price as a digital PS5, make it make sense, first of all, no more 1TB PS4s, they should make it 500GB standard, then, lower the price from 299 to 199/149 dollars, there it is, they would sell millions and millions more PS4s, would be probably sitting at 125 - 130M right now

With supply issues at the time I doubt they could build them that cheap.
