This highlights there being a massive disconnect and problem with gaming journalism.
Paul Tassi almost certainly spoke with someone at Microsoft who could or could not be telling the truth, but also Paul doesn't care if they're telling the truth. He's largely a shill for Microsoft. So he never gets a second source to verify.
Not that journalism isn't collapsing anyways, but gaming journalism is years if not decades ahead in its rot.
Why was it so important for Paul Tassi to claim this game was a paid exclusive, based on one source, so important to further put his reputation on the line?
It's because he works for Microsoft (indirectly) and they called this in.
It's very damaging for Microsoft to have people thinking that the Series S is causing issues for them getting the biggest games in the industry. People want to play the biggest games and if they have the idea that this is going to continue, then why buy an Xbox?
So the bad day for Paul Tassi is that he is seeing his career flash before his eyes. He's always been a shill, but this is probably one of the first high profile times he's been publicly refuted by his peers.
Microsoft's game is OBVIOUS.
- Fulfill their contracts on Xbox Series hardware.
- Keep their game revenue and gamepass revenue as high as possible
- Keep their core audience tuned into the xbox ecosystem until they launch their PC based model
My guess is that Microsoft will launch their PC based console in 2026. In time for the launch of GTA6 on PC. They'll continue to support the XBS for a few years as they hope to transition people to the new PC. The PC will be compatible with Xbox console games and allow you to buy PC games. They may even discontinue the Series S if it proves to be a problem for games like GTA6.
