PlayStation have just shared the most played games on PlayStation by hours played in their Ultimate 2023 review. There are quite a few countries featured but obviously not every country. There are some very interesting regional trends to see. Rankings are based on total hours played across PlayStation®4 and PlayStation®5 consoles between 1st January 2023 and 30th November 2023.

South Korea is the only country where none of the top 3 are F2P games.
Also not very surprising that Diablo 4 is at the top.
Diablo 2 is played a decent amount in South Korea. Can't forget the GOAT SC:BW as well, but that's only PC.

BTW I always said the most played game was FIFA ops EA Sport by a long margin.

Even at may work office they had PS4s with FIFA to play at intervals… it is very common here at IT companies.

I won’t be surprised if there is a close 1:1 ratio between console sold and FIFA/EA games

Fornite now being a game engine subset to develop for and platform for game distribution itself is honestly the closest thing to ready player one.

With Lego Fornite and rocket league now. The skin and emote functionality being to some extent cross-game compatible… I’m mostly blown away by it. I’m not a fan of Fortnite or even bother to try it but you don’t have to be… it can be anything. It’s just its own beast.

You could literally port every game into Fortnite. Final Fantasy Fortnite Online could be a thing for instance. They could launch a smash clone with guest characters. There is no limit now.

It’s both impressive snd terrifying and a threat to console maker storefronts. The biggest immediate issue being the ability to circle around console online paywalls. You could see many smaller devs preferring to make games in Fortnite.

Why can you play Fortnite and Call of Duty online for free, but GTA Online requires a PS+ subscription? This is insane.

Yep. But Japan has terrible taste now days in games. Same game on a console they wont touch, but if its portable it sells buckets.

To be fair, it is fun blowing away clubs I hated in J1 by adding huge debt using editor.

FM got way too complex and time consuming. Championship manager and PC Futbol had the right balance of complexity and fun.
