Turns out Sony had been working on the Portal since 2017 and it was at one point made from the Dualshock 4.

I don't want to say duh but we've seen patents that showed controllers with a big screen from Sony for like five or six years now.

@Loy310 @anonpuffs another product that was in development long before Jim took over....stop giving that bum undeserved credit. All he's ever done is put games on pc and xbox and greenlight 12 live service games.
Do you really think this product took 7 years of R&D to come to market? Lol come on. Regardless of whether or not it was a project started under someone else Jim was the one who kept it alive and brought it to market.

I knew a portable was coming based on these patents years ago. I just wrongly assumed it would be able to play its own games and not focus on remote play.

Yep, they did patent many variants of this concept of a PS gamepad with a display in the middle.

Why would the avg person just not use their smartphone or tablet?
Your smartphone or tablet don't have 16:9 (same aspect ratio than a tv) 8" display, and doesn't have a functional DualSense embedded in the sides.

And probably has worse wifi or display, and if not it's way more expensive.

bruh, the steamdeck started dev in 2017/2018 after the failure of the steam machine and that was way more complex:
-handheld device from a company with no history of handheld device development unlike Sony which has had several
-creation of a completely new bespoke OS out of nothing, based on a fractured Linux environment, to emulate Windows DirectX as opposed to something built off of existing android tablets and displays that leverages existing remote play software
-needed to incorporate heavy duty compute in cpu/gpu instead of just networking chips
-complete ground-up controller design vs using a split-in-half dualsense

Come on Sony isn't that incompetent that they needed 7 years to come up with the portal

I was kidding, it obviously didn't take 7 years but it shows that most of the groundwork was laid before he came into the picture (like with literally everything else except support for pc/xbox/gaas). Streaming/remote play has only grown and improved since then, so there was no reason to cancel it. I'm not joking when I say he deserves credit for everything bad and no credit for anything good.

I'm not saying jim personally put on a lab coat and made it himself lol, just that he oversaw it launching right now. Part of marketing is the timing of products. If we can kill him for pc ports that probably started before him then we can give him credit when something launching under him does well. Again I don't even like the guy or how he tilted PS into a moneygrubbing machine going full speed towards gaas but I have to keep it real.

Also without Jim you wouldn't have the absolutely hilarious headline of PS Portal outselling xbox entirely:

"Per manufacturer request" is cold af lmao

Well lets see it sell past 10million before we call it a success.
But PS brand power from last gen has helped PS5 sales. He’s made some good decisions with supply issues and stocks around the world. Pricing, have a digital model close to series S price was good too.

Other than that I dont think Hermen or Jim have been great
