There is something to be said about the value Steam Stats and charts have for the Steam platform as a free and gratuitous article/discussion/marketing generation machine keeping Steam associated with games and in mindshare despite not necessarily been the most popular platform nor most active platform for the game in question or games in general - as opposed to say PlayStation or Nintendo. Every time you get some headline or article like this, to the uninitiated the impression is that Steam is the "it" for judging popularity (and thus the platform to be in - the choice to make) when it's not, with less than half of the revenue of PlayStation on software distribution alone.
Again, here is a perfect example of console platform holders lagging behind. An initiative like this boils down to a few allocated dollars and a small dedicated team to work across departments in the creation of free tools in a website (metrics, player reviews etc) for the public and PlayStation users. That is, to deepen the ecosystem with the little details - and I can bet you Sony internally has these tools, just probably not as consumer friendly. But the fossils at SIE, specially in Marketing who should be the ones pushing for an initiative like this (the Eric Lempels of this world) in their high perches can't see any of it - and if they can see it and decide not to do anything about it - grossly incompetent. Either way just brain dead idiocy and indicative of the generational leadership divide. Jim and the others can't leave soon enough - that is not to say it's guaranteed their replacements will be better, but there is at least a > 0% chance.
