Sony’s console was released on November 19, 2020 but according to Sony Interactive Entertainment‘s platform business group CEO Hideaki Nishino, development on its mid-generation upgrade had already started before then.

“We have done Pro in the last generation,” Nishino told Variety. “We learned a lot from there. When we were selling PS4 Pro, in addition to the PS4, 20% of customers actually got the PS4 Pro.

“It was high end, it was premium tier. So there are potential users acquiring those kind of units. Interestingly enough, it was not just about highly engaged users – actually, new users came to PlayStation to get PS4 Pro, as well.

“So we started working on PS5 Pro even before PS5 launched — it was another five-year project for us. So there was a conversation around whether we wanted to do another Pro or not.

some facts doesn't add up. we had news with time table how they did PRO in 19 months and didn't miss any Goal along the development time.
now, it is 5 years?

Maybe discussing it not developing it.

I hope this is the last generation of pro consoles. Just make a powerful console at launch and be done until next generation.

I actually didn't mind PS4 Pro thought it was needed but with the PS5 it's nothing but a cash grab and I refuse to get behind it. Especially since they haven't pushed the PS5 to its limit as yet. I still haven't fully seen what the PS5 can truly do and I'm suppose to buy a Pro?

now, it is just a question, did we reach the limit of graphical fidelity or devs just don't give a fuck and use the power with 0 optimization?

because looking at a lot of games, they aren't that 10TF good looking and plague with different kind of problems.
by the look of it. more power, didn't end up materializing into something way better, it is just more of the same from PS4 for the most part.

very few games really justify that 10TF.
at least, PRO will offer 60fps in PS5 fidelity mode who are interested in FPS, which is pretty nice, bigger SSD and faster USBs.

Well I've always thought PS4 graphics were perfect and we could have stopped there. There were other areas we could improve like animations, loading ,Physics, particle effects, frame rate, world building... a few games like Ratchet, Horizon, Returnal showed us PS5 was a worthy successor at lauch in those areas. But graphically I think we're almost at the Pinnacle now we need developers to realize this.

it would be perfect, if 90% of devs would reach The Last of Us 2 animations/physics/graphics/sound design in their game, instead on punching copy paste quests, bloated worlds.
Had nothing but pure blast playing Mafia Remake. it was perfect remake for brilliant game.

I didn’t care for PS4 pro either but it at least made a little marketing sense. 4K TV’s and HDR were new around that time so why not market a 4K HDR console. Even the PS4 was updated to support HDR which everybody was surprised about.

Videogame industry is unique in that consoles don’t have to keep up to date with graphics though. So these more powerful consoles are objectively not needed. Only in this market can you release one device for 7 to 10 years and sales go up then peak until the next cycle. It’s actually more beneficial now since console can be updated over the years. As they have been. There’s no reason to mess up a good thing or try and change it.

PS5 has not been fully used I don’t believe. There’s still more to get out of it. The SSD I know for a fact has not be used to it’s full potential yet. No game has used 22GB a second compressed.

This is wholly unrealistic.

If the goal is to launch with a system in the range of 500-600 dollars, there are limits to how powerful it will be.

In that same vein, technology marches on. Within 3-4 years a Pro machine is warranted to keep up with PC. Yet at the same time it doesn't make sense to try to start a new generation so early anymore given marginal increases in graphical capabilities and how long games take to develop.

Can you refute a single thing that I said?

One powerful console doesn’t mean having to price it at $1000.

I’m talking about building something that can last the whole generation. Kind of like it’s been done up until now. This is not a new concept.

Nothing warrants a pro machine at all. Graphics are not the top selling feature of a console. Good games are. At this point in time graphics technology is more than good enough anyway.

Trying to keep up with PC makes no sense when all of Sony’s games are on PC. That reason doesn’t work anymore.

Can you refute a single thing that I said?

There’s nothing to refute. It’s my opinion on console generations. Calm down.

Not sure why people keep chasing power. The power from PS4 & PS5 is small yet notable but the gap between from PS5 to PS6 & beyond will become less & less unless you charge $600+ which in that case contradict the nature of consoles.

Nintendo continue to show how to be the market leader yet competitors ignore the strategy. You can have dog shit specs but if your making more exclusive games then your competitors like Xbox & PS you can outsell both as shown w Switch. This trend will continue w Switch 2 as long as they don’t change there business. I could very well see Nintendo to be the first console maker to surpass 200 million console sells as Xbox & PS continues to diminish there platform & release games on PC & Nintendo

Done until when? You're ignoring how technology has changed and that there are diminishing returns on silicon.

Games take longer to develop now than ever.

Nothing warrants a pro machine at all. Graphics are not the top selling feature of a console. Good games are. At this point in time graphics technology is more than good enough anyway.

Maybe for you they are. You have an option. Just don't buy a mid gen console.

It is when the same games are on PC as they are console which was a natural evolution of consoles going x86.

Your baseless opinions you mean right?
