Who could have predicted that Gamepass is value destructive?

We've been beating that drums for years. Gamepass, in it's current form, is value destructive. It conditioned a whole fanbase to not pay for games. It conditioned them even further to reject games not on Gamepass.

That coupled with a weak console offering and mediocre first-party games output killed the Xbox brand. The acquisition was the last hurrah that lasted a few months. People are blaming investors, people are blaming Sony, but the truth is that Nadella more than likely expected immediate growth and return, and they got none. That's it, there's no big conspiracy.

What I love the most is that Gamepass is killing it's host. Without Xbox console Gamepass is not viable since paid online was a big reasons why Xbox owners paid for it.

Cloud and PC can't make up for the lost Xbox subscription in the long run.

Game sales is what MS will have to rely on and their own studios, Bethesda, Activision and Blizzard are at an all time low when it come to quality and success of their games with MS management likely to make things even worse.

They're even charging it to FFXIV players. Yes, on top of the subscription paid to Square Enix.

Very "pro-consumer" as always.

Xbox so called competition is a bad influence on Sony as it shows them what they can get away with. Imagine Steam trying to charge you a subscription on top of the subscription you already pay SE to develop the game and run the servers, only MS could come up with something as stupid as paid online.

Well if you go on gaf you’ll see me saying it for years. And getting banned for arguement over it lol.
It was obvious. Same as Xbox going day and day releases with PC.

I also say its a bad idea for PS to release games on PC so quickly. It should take 3-5 years and only for some games. PS4 had an amazing generation of sales, as did Nintendo with Switch. They dont need the PC market, like Andrew House said, PC is competition

The same way many of us have mentioned forever that Gamepass is value destructive, we've also mentioned that PC ports are value destructive for playstation, and they are.

Now that they have cornered the
Console market, releasing on PC will be completely braindead.

I still have a feeling they will continue to do it.

Hold back a handful of exclusives that define the console, Demon souls, Bloodborne 2.

We even got the Insomniac leaks showing that Sony ain't making much money on PC.

It's just not reasonable for someone to argue that it's worth porting all there games to PC and lose the PS5 exclusivity over a couple of hundred million in revenue (not even profit) over many years.

The pivot to PC failed as spectacularly as the GaaS pivot (not a coincidence since one is what was used to justify the other).

Game as a Service and ports to PC is what killed the Xbox in the end.

Exactly, I was banned on a forum for writing basically that. People did not realize investors want returns quickly and that MS never own/managed that many studios. Gamepass is only possible because MS has a lot of money, it was a way to try to disrupt the gaming space and Xbox's competitors.

The fake praise of the service on media, the use of it as a savior of the brand by fans... all that was noise.

Exactly we are in a state were gaming companies barely make enough revenue due to high costs of developing a AAA game.

The entire xbox fandom is predicated on denying reality... it was bound to catch up with them. We all had to suffer through the intense propaganda campaign a trillion dollar corporation implemented in order to try to make it a reality so I think all of us living in the real world deserve our accolades for continuing to point out how ludicrous the whole thing was.
