Ubisoft would have a winning formula with just making a hattori hanzo game, as it is they push the bs mythological deities shit in AC. Hanzo could have been a ninja serving the tokugawa shogunate that defends against supernatural threats and finds out about the templars in the process and how they are trying to subvert japanese rule and joins the order of assassins. The game would have been a hit with the japanese, gamers would not be outraged and they would have sold gangbusters. But I guess ubislop and common sense are antithetical to each other

The Yasuke character would have felt like something that would have been a day one launch edition side quest but instead Ubi Soft chose to have the character as one of the protagonists. There are many other historical JAPANESE male samurai that they could have went with for this game. In particular, they could have gone with a samurai named Akechi Mitsuhide who in real life was a samurai general that ended up assassinating Oda Nobunaga. Based off of the trailer it is apparent that Oda Nobunaga will be a Templar and main villain of the game.
It is an odd choice but this is mainly a concern in the west. I looked at Japanese social media to see the reaction, they are fine with it. However, they are mainly concerned about Ubisoft's involvement. Lol People think Ubisoft will fail to create a compelling story around it.

So stunning and brave.

Number of asian men Samurai during Nobunaga period: estimated tens of thousands.
Number of black men Samurai during Nobunaga period: zero

Ubisoft: Our Samurai is black because there was this one guy who was black during that time!
Number of asian men Shinobi during Nobunaga period: estimated thousands from Iga
Number of asian women Kunoichi during Nobunaga period: most historians claim that kunoichi never actually existed.

Ubisoft: Our ninja is a woman!

They used:
- a subsaharian black man for Egypt
- middle-eastern caucasian men for Israel, Syria and Turkey
- an olive-toned caucasian man for Italy
- white caucasian men for England
- white caucasian men for France
- a native american and a black woman for U.S.A
- a northern man/woman for Norway
- an olive-toned caucasian man/woman for Greece

And finally:

- a black man for Japan

Why does Ubisoft hate asian men?

Even if we grant Yasuke as samurai to use him(which he wasn't), they straight away make him Ronin in the game, which clearly indicates that using him is just an excuse inject their DEI policies.
Especially clear about ex ubi employee exposing them for having all japanese game and they just thrown that away.

Leaving aside the whole black samurai and yasuke shitshow this game has more hurdles to cross. Its a ubislop game, there will be bloat, bloat is not that bad if people like the MC and combat but again this is ubislop game so characters and combat will be bottom tier, Ubisoft can't ever tell a coherent good story and don't have the art direction or gameplay design to make up for it.

They will have the exclusive totillo's, doritos, mountain dew exclusive content along with single player battle passes with skin unlocks as rewards......... The list goes on. Having a black samurai should be the least of their worries

You can cherry pick comments here and there but the overall sentiment is nuetral. They are mostly worried about Ubisoft failing to make a compelling story around it; which it will.

yeah, install game you need internet, to play single player you need internet, which is total bullshit and should be main focus and retarded battle passes.
this should be main focus, but it will be put under the rug.

Dude there's an article on Forbes from a guy who speaks Japanese and lived in Japan about the overall reaction of Japanese people in their social media.

I don't need to cherrypick shit. Just go see the youtube comments on Ubisoft Japan's trailer.
There's embedded translation there, everyone can see what the top comments say.

As a Japanese person, I feel it's a shame that just when it was Japan's turn to play the role, the direction was changed to ``the main character is a foreign race who is not a local race."

For the first time, I understood what cultural appropriation was.

Yasuke wasn’t a samurai.

He wasn't in Japan very long , to become a samurai you'd have to have training in a lot of things
