Series S being sold for $220 and Sony can't put PS5 under $400? Can we call bullshit?

Two different products, of course.

Target is currently selling Series S for $220.

Considering the hardware differences, is it not reasonable to assume that Sony could lower PS5 prices to at least sub 400? Maybe even 350 if they need to hit sales targets?

Tell me your opinion and provide insight if you work in tech below.

Drastic cuts like that would significantly impact revenue. U can only cut so much until u reach a point when u are doing more damage than good. Like at the series x and what a disaster last year was for it. It was only at the tail end of the holiday season when they were being completely destroyed by ps5 that Microsoft bring the series x down to $350 for a limited time. Right now it makes no sense to cut sub for hundred as a regular price for Sony with forgiven change rates hurting them and other factors. They just came off a record year, their highest ever in the history of the brand despite not meeting targets. A sub $400 makes no business sense now unless something changes like the pro entering the market or when they had to clear stock for the revision.

I mean they can but they don't want to lose money.

Yeah, this. Microsoft have been taking $100 - $200 losses on each Series console sold for a long time now, and they also have channels stuffed with backlogged systems (especially the S), hence rumors like them completely halting new console production. It's probably to try flushing the channels of back stock, and from what's been mentioned in the past Microsoft don't buy back unsold systems, so clearing them out is up to the retailers.

The new discless PS5 could probably be priced at $399 and that's what I was expecting at first, but Sony felt differently. Even so, there are some sales promotions going on across Europe ATM for PS5s IIRC, so they'll bite the costs periodically when it seems worth doing so.

How much could we estimate them losing per console if they sold for 400 or 350?

I don't think they'd lose much at 400....
No idea, I believe last info we have from Sony is that PS5 is being sold at a profit, considering it's selling similar to PS4 I don't think they find it necessary to do price cuts.

Sony could lower the prices but they won't because then it affects their bottom line. The price was increased to migitate this and I guess give them wiggle room for minor temporary drops here and there... Like we are seeing in Europe.

Either way PS5 is still too expensive but they aren't necessarily hurting for sales outside of a few European markets

The PS5 was just discounted in parts of Europe. I think once the Pro releases, the slim consoles will receive a permanent price cut of $100 off.

Well, that would be great.... maybe as soon as the Pro is announced, since the announcement alone would influence things.

PS5 is due for a price cut this Fall anyways. I don't think they can get away without doing either. After last holiday season, I'm sure they realized this.
Yep, Sony needs to be a lot more aggressive if they're serious about selling consoles right now in this current economy. But if the rumors of 4 more PC ports for this year are true, then that will just be 1 step forward and 2 steps back!

For instance, I believe PS4 was 300 at a similar time in its lifecycle....

It also had more full exclusives I would say.

I don't see them being price aggressive, they weren't even aggressive during PS4 era which was what kept the Xbox One alive. But I see a $50 price drop around Black Friday.

If you take the fact Sony still produce 80% disc PS5 then I believe Sony have profit with disc PS5 but lose with DE.

IMO the cost should be around $450 (the BD drive difference is lower than $10).

So they are having around $50 loss with DE and $50 profit with disc PS5.
I can see a drop this year to $450 for the disc model and no cut in DE.

That is US of course.
The biggest issue for Sony is Europe prices where they probably are losing in both units.
In Europe I don’t thing they can cut without loses.
