What I don't get is how he never gets called out for all the shit he does and how all the narratives MS comes up with actually stick for a while (at least on the surface). I think it comes from the fact that Sony is extremely incompetent at playing the same PR game.

Just imagine how much people would mock Sony if they were the ones that promised VR support then walked back on it, releases a console with no launch lineup, made fake demonstrations for stuff like Smartglass/Kinect/Illumirum, Fuck people still bring up Sony target renders from 2008, while MS does this sort of stuff pretty much annually even on some of their biggest titles.

For all the praise Phil/Gamepass got for making gaming inclusive, for providing value, for making games cheap, Jimbo/Sony show up with a much better service on every level (including the basic tier), yet it's like nothing happened, I'm yet to see any praise on that level. Makes me believe that they actually paid for all the praise before, not very surprising giving MS history of playing dirty.

I don't think Sony (or Nintendo for that matter) is trying to play the same PR game and I greatly appreciate that.

You play to win. You should never leave any avenue for your competitors opened - including the dirty ones. I think Sony's marketing strategy when it comes to the anglo markets is completely flawed, and they need a serious shake up in personal at the top of the marketing echelons. P2P (ad money, priviliged access, gifts, job prospects, fake grassroots campaigns etc) rules anglo-speaking media landscape and pays dividends. It's what it's. If you have to dab on it head to toe, you do it, no hesitation. Billions of dollars in play.

I prefer actions over words. Give me great games, hardware, service, and services. Show me why my money should go to you. All the Twitter posts, PR double speak, FUD, etc. is just noise in the wind. Sony has been doing a good job in my books in this regard.

People still bring up the hack from 2011 whenever XBL or other services are criticized, so I mean... at this point, I almost expect the double standard.

At the end of the day, Phil is gonna do what he's gotta do to sell his product. I can only fault him so far for that.

My ire is aimed more at the people who see this, who know this, and who cover for and HELP with it. People in the media who know that there are double standards and won't call them out. Who spout misinformation, knowing it's not true, knowing they are lying to consumers... and they do it in hopes of being noticed and rewarded. Hell, influencers have openly admitted they push Xbox because Xbox sends them more free stuff. People in the press will push misinfo about certain games being exclusive on their show and then later try to claim they were doing a comedic bit. YouTubers will lie about Xbox hardware, lie about PlayStation hardware and software, and deliberately lie to people to try to influence public perception and how they spend their money all in the hopes that Phil and Greenberg will do for them what they've done for Parris and Colt, invite them to dinner, fly them to watch parties with the execs,

Yeah, I have issues with MS playing that way to an extent. Absolutely. But at the end of the day, moving that product IS their job. It's disgraceful that these other groups pretend it's theirs as well.

EDIT: To be fair, this extends beyond just Xbox. Biases are way too prevalent in the gaming press in general. I still remember that podcast clip where someone admitted that if any other game had used some of the design elements in Elden Ring they'd bash it, but since it was FromSoft and they love FromSoft they were a lot more tolerant of it. Nintendo almost always gets a free pass for their shenanigans as well; I still remember people writing articles defending them selling literal cardboard and patterns to follow for $60+, among other things.

But again, it's these companies' job to make money. It's supposed to be the gaming media's job to look out for consumers, not just help these companies promote these products and services. It gets old.
