I preferred E3 over Summer Game Fest. Pubs and Console manufacturers obviously abhorred the venue cost and the strict timeline for putting up a show with demos and the like but in the end MS/Sony/Nintendo plus the big pubs had to show up and compete and win their lunch money. They had to compete hard for your dollar by creating enthusiasm for their products in direct comparison to the competition at the same venue. They had no where to hide.
While in some ways it's admirable what Dorito Pope has done, in other ways you must also understand that his self promotion and elevation has come at the expense of E3 going the way of the doo-doo, and capitalizing on this as the "savior". Be mindful of that. We've already seen the consequences of what sitting on two chairs does to the Game Awards. "Consensus" third party picks (politicization) get the "prestigious" award instead of exclusives, lest it embarrass one of the main sponsors, and main venue owner too much sitting in front row. Elden Ring and Sekiro, Death Stranding and God of War: Ragnarok tell the tale. The man has to balance a lot, credit to him but that is not necessarily what's best for gaming.
