The truth is even when FF was big it wasn't that good, it was running on nostalgia fumes for way too long. Exclusivity had nothing to do with it underperforming.

The way Square Enix keep talking about disappointing FF sales you would think the FF series is Pokemon level.
Horizon ZD has outsold every individual FF game.

It is rather expensive!
The cost of those recent FF games are propably easily in the 100+ Million Range, which requires Millions of copies sold, to be justified.
They kind of cornered themselves in the "go big or go home" dead end.
The Irony there is, that the platforms with exclusives (PS and Switch) are the ones doing the best, overall!
PC Gaming, is just mainly centered around Steam, but faceless otherwise.
Xbox became a complete joke, with zero identity, and no real future in hardware.

It's undeniably true that PC gamers spend more time playing multiplayer games, sim games, and other downright trash. Fortnite, Minecraft, League of Legends, Roblox, tons of janky copy/paste survival games, farming simulators. Speaking of them as competition for PS makes as much sense as talking about Nintendo as competition, they're after different markets.

Which ones? Depends on who you ask. I say VI, VII, X, XII, XIII, Lightning Returns, and Crisis Core are all peak gaming
VII is junk. Paper thin characters, boring story with nearly zero nuance and then there's the GAMEPLAY, holy shit. How is anyone calling this shit peak? In what world is this even close to peak? Hard bosses exist just to make you putter around the crappy world grinding a bunch, it's not like you're going to come up with some insane strategy to win at a lower level. Dated garbage.
