This means that the Belgian games market has experienced uncharacteristically dynamic growth over the past year. According to data from the Video Games Federation Belgium (VGFB), the industry in the country generated a total turnover of 708 million euros in 2023, 21.6 per cent more than in the previous year. The data is based on numbers by Games Sales Data, supplemented by data from AppMagic in the mobile sector.
The association attributes the boom mainly to pent-up PS5 sales: "The significant increase can largely be attributed to the explosive sales of PlayStation 5 consoles," says David Verbruggen, General Manager of VGFB. "In the year 2022, the PlayStation 5 was hardly available due to chip shortages as a result of the corona pandemic. From the beginning of 2023, that situation was completely reversed and Belgian consumer brought PlayStation 5 consoles en masse."
According to the VGFB, 43 per cent of software sales come from the physical sale of games. The best-selling game in 2023 was EA Sports FC 24, which beat out Hogwarts Legacy despite the latter's exceptional success in the year as a whole.

It's a pity they don't break down the stats further like France and the UK, but it's good to know that here, as everywhere else it seems, PS5 is the driver behind both the console and of course the VG market (almost synonymous, but for the only other completing platform, mobile).
