I'm in the middle of playing this game that I never even started playing years ago, and I must confess that out of every game played these days, there is no AI like it. These guys have a goldmine that they can expound on for future games and possibly sell this tech to other studios or migrate it into a popular graphics engine like Unreal.

I'm talking about the Nemesis system in Shadow of War (Lord of the Rings).

* Procedural generation of looks
* AI pathfinding is excellent and aware of x, y, and z locations for finding the main character
* Seemingly unlimited dialogue based on your current situation (i.e. a large database)
* Fear-induced AI as well as AI for rivals of the same species
* Animations for any scenario you place in the AI
* Adaptation of your own techniques to dispatch them can be learned.
* Can use any weapon in the game.
* Some hunt in packs and can ambush you.
* Have their own lifestyle such as drinking, eating, and singing.

Warframe also has a nemesis system, an all-taunting nasty lich that not only insults you but tracks you down in-game.

It's such a fun system, although i don't think its as fleshed out as shadow of wars one.

I’ve only been threatened by AI really in stealth games. Can’t say I notice their behaviors in most other games.

With that said, altho it’s been way too long to define why I choose MGSV… but it’s probably MGSV.

Idk even though ppl complained about bugs in "Days Gone" I really loved the dynamic nature of the AL. I'd literally kill a zombie at a gas station and see other zombies go to the body to eat from it, thought tht was so dope. Also if a feline and a bear would by chance cross paths I'd sit back and watch them go at it, same as the smaller zombies against the big ones. If a big one was chasing me and I'd disappear and there were smaller zombies, all hell would break loose. Dope details like tht that really had me loving the game.

I love the Nemesis system, absolutely agree. No wonder WB issued a patent for it. I hope they dont waste it.

Is it better than Nemesis though. ;)

Yes. Nemesis is a system to generate AI opponents, and it excels there. The AI itself in the game, where it matters, during gameplay, is where my focus is at. If that's not the point of the thread, but rather AI as a whole, then I agree with you.

I'm not sure where the procedural behavior is in TLOU game that would have more branching structures and "states" like one of the Orcs in SoW. None of the zombies even talk unless you are talking about the people. Can you be more detailed with why you think TLOU has the best AI of any game to date? I listed several aspects of the AI that most games don't have (especially single player games).

The way enemies interact between themselves, the environment, In searching for the player, is second to none. In grounded, they'll even search for you if you reload close to them. They'll talk to each other, flank you accordingly, even mention random landmarks you're close to. It feels organic. The only game that comes close in enemy AI in terms of engagement is MGS V

Nemesis does this and more. Will an enemy communicate to others on how you normally attack so they can avoid being attacked that way? Can they adapt to your button mashing and counter it? If there is a fire, will they avoid it and go around? Do they talk about one of the leaders and how their weapon is very powerful? Do they have an appetite to eat?

Considering there's usually no leader, half of those don't occur. And they don't adjust to your button mashing, they have different weapons that require different kinds of button mashing. It's the same with ghost of Tsushima, whose AI is nothing special.

Shadow of War does exactly what I'm saying it does. There are leaders around every Orc tribe. Some leaders will summon other Orcs.

They do adjust to your button mashing. The Champions on up do. It will say "Enemy Adapted" and I can no longer dodge them or vault over their heads in a single battle.

I looked at TLOU 1 in grounded mode you mention and it doesn't seem like nothing special to me. Definitely not as advanced as Nemesis. MGSV just has extra sensitive hearing. That's not enough to claim a good AI. None of the enemies in MGSV or TLOU 2 have the complexity like Nemesis has.

This is not a subjective opinion, it's literally a known fact when comparing aspects of the various AI systems to other games.

Up to this day, I'm still amazed at Black & White and the Creature AI.

The Nemesis system is great and adds a lot to the gameplay in the two games it's being used.
