Bungie was the worst possible acquisition for Sony, Square Enix would be WAY better

it would bring way more first party games to the table, way more exclusive games, just 2 years after the Bungie acquisition we have 5+ live service games cancelled, Bungie becoming a dead weight company with a lot of employees and profits decreasing and failing to meet targets, Square would fill years like 2023 and 2024 with first party experiences like Final Fantasy 16, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Forspoken, Foamstars

Disagree. I love square games but Sony would shutter half of that company. Also new CEO wouldn't go for it. Square isn't profitable enough.

Destiny 2 is a game at the end of it's lifecycle. Watch Bungie release a new IP and hype would be through the roof.

I don't think Square Enix would've wanted to sell, especially not back then when they were riding the highs of Endwalker.
Big corporations like these and the suits at the top really don't want to sell unless they desperately need it to survive.

I constantly see acquisition talk here but it's always "they should acquire XYZ" with no regards to if the other party would even entertain such a deal(usually it's no).
Reminds me of hockey fans doing mock trades...
They always end up making great trades in their minds, because somehow the other party would let themselves get fleeced in their imaginary scenario.

Among all of the things mentioned above Square would also have cost 3 to 4 times more than Bungie and, as far as I can tell haven't had a hit in the past 3 to 4 years. AND their biggest releases are PS-exclusive anyway.

Who knows what is going on? Maybe Bungie's extensive live service knowledge and advice has been useful. It is better to cancel a live service game after consulting them, rather than release it and have egg on your face if it flops. These games are tricky to make, and several have vanished.

Square Enix is probably not interested in any acquisition talk.

Shouldve just invested in both of them. 2 billion each and just have been the publisher for their games instead of the outright owner of one.

It actually was a good buy. Square is all over the place quality wise and does not have a cohesive vision.

Destiny 2 is on its sunseting stage after 7 years in the market, it's still generating a ton of money but obviously way less than before.

The Marathon teasers broke records in Youtube, very likely will be a top seller game like all the previous Bungie games. Same goes with potential Destiny 3 and other potential upcoming Bungie games.

There's a lot of potential in the movie/tv show/animation adaptations of the Bungie IPs they are working on.

Games like Helldivers 2 and upcoming Sony GaaS titles also got and will be benefited of their knowledge, data, tools and expertise.

Bungie was a great acquisition.

Yes, it will for the already published games and the ones to be published.

Regarding cancelled games (not only GaaS), it's always better to detect and cancel the ones that aren't going to work as fast as possible because you throw less money to the garbage bin and can be invested instead on other games (not only GaaS) that have more chances to perform well.

True. Apparently what SE plans to do is to turn some of their studios into subsidiary companies to allow external investors to buy a part of them.

Sony could be one of them. That would help Sony invest only in the SE parts they are interested, and wouldn't cause them any issue with regulators as an acquisition would.

Bungie already made a lot of money even without Sony put their hands.
If Sony can make the structure like they want they will probably become the best Sony's studio.

And yes they make more money than Square Enix game by game base.
Of course Square Enix come ahead in quantity.

I am glad Sony didn't buy a publisher, would have been a disaster like it has been for Xbox

Bungie will pay off over time. Their only issue is that they are at the tail end of Destiny 2s appeal and it probably should have ended as a live service a year or two ago

It's the way y'all are writing off Bungie when they haven't released a single new game in almost as a decade.

If Marathom and project Gummy Bear flops then absolutely they were horrible purchase. But it's a bit unfair to say so? Currently

And Square ain't a good purchase...

Sony needs to stop reducing their workforce before buying anyone else...

Wikipedia says Firesprite had 265 employees as of 2021, what was Sony even thinking? There is also Fabrik listed as a Firesprite support studio. It legit looks like some sort of money laundering scheme.

There is also Firewalk and Haven that never even released a game.

Other than Housemarque I didn't like any of their acquisitions since Insomniac. Blue Point hasn't done anything besides remakes and seems like Sony bet on them moving on to their own game when they bought them, since then we got nothing from them.
