Sony's first live-service game, Concord, had beta issues on PS5

  • On PS5, Concord's first 'Early Access' beta performed 8% better than the second 'Open Beta'
  • The Early Access beta was initially for preorders only but later opened up to all PS Plus subscribers
  • The Open Beta was open to all, but it looks like PS Plus served as a better advertisement for the 5v5 shooter
Using a gameplay data sample from over 3.1 million active PSN accounts (courtesy of our partnership with GameInsights), we can see that Concord has 8.1% fewer players in the second Open Beta than in the Early Access beta. In our PlayStation Chart that ranks the top 40 most popular games every week, Concord ranked in the #29 position both weeks.

While the decrease isn't significant, the drop is still unexpected given that the first beta was initially supposed to be limited to pre-orders only, and the second beta was supposed to be the 'Open Beta' for all players.

“No Battle Pass, folks,” tweeted Firewalk Studios gameplay animation director, Mark DeRidder, today. “You own Concord, Concord doesn’t own you.” The team behind the game also shared a series of slides explaining more about how progression will work in the planet-hopping shooter and what the plans are for post-launch content.

Just a point here...

This player drop is based in the users registered in https://www.truetrophies.com.

It is basically a useless metric... most if not all in TrueTrophies have PS+ (they are after hardcore trophy hunters) so if you played at first week and didn't like you won't play at the second week... it is not like the Open Beta increased their players pool lol

It is like I asking 10 friends if they participated in the Beta at first week and after ask again the same 10 friends if they participated in the second week lol
And draw conclusions about it lol

I hope they ignore all the bad PR, give it a year of support, and move on to a new game. They clearly have the talent, but this game doesn’t seem to have an it factor

Useless metrics. But I guess Concord generates engagement for thread makers

This game is going to flop so hard. I genuinely cannot believe they thought those character designs would fly.

Ground breaking opinion 😱

So 3.1 million Playstation gamers played the beta. This doesn’t get mentioned for obvious reasons.

Now imagine there's many players like myself not factored into the consensus since I didn't register with them... It would explain why I never had to wait more than 10 seconds a for a match.... In-fact I was in matches by 4 seconds tops 🤔

This was obvious lol. It's clear the focus for this game was always on PlayStation. Even the PC build was in bad shape from the start and made sure everyone knew they would be getting crashes.

No, you misread. The 3.1 million are the PSN accounts that opted-in to the website for tracking purposes, playing any assortment of games. Out of that is however many were playing Concord (number not specified), and from that number there was an 8% drop week-over-week.

It doesn't get mentioned because it's not true.

They used a data sample from 3.1 million PSN accounts in general, not just accounts that activated and played the game.
That's a statistically relevant sample from which they can infer that the player count for Concord lowered by 8%. The article makes no mention of total number of Concord players.

I see.

Honestly this has got to be the most useless information provided.

Well done Sony and Firewalk.

That is correct.
But the comparison with the same sample of who played in the first week and who played in the second week is useless because those that played the first week and didn't like it probably didn't play the second week.

If they give the actual number of users that played from these 3.1m it could be more interesting... better yet if they give all unique users that played thought that two weeks from these 3.1 million... that way we can extrapolate statistically to the overall PS5 base.

What the site owner did is a disservice to any statistical metric and still calls that "logic" lol

"Concord’s second free weekend on PS5 defies logic with 8% player drop"... are they expecting the same 3.1 million sample that already have PS+ to play more the 2nd week than the 1st one? The logic is that if you play the 1st week you will not play it the 2nd week if you didn't like it 🤷‍♂️

8% drop means that people that disliked it at the point of not playing the 2nd week was really a small part from that sample... that goes against the narrative that everybody is hating the Beta lol

It's not useless because on the first beta weekend only people who got invites could play. People who pre-ordered the game would get an invite plus 4 others to give to friends.

On the second beta weekend it was free for anyone with a PSN account.

On Steam, the number of people playing doubled from ~1000 to ~2000 on the second weekend. It's quite jarring that these numbers actually went 8% down on the same conditions for Playstation users.

Skill Up says these results probably mean the game is DoA as it is, and it should be postponed after a revamp with a new marketing push down the line.
I tend to agree.
