Cultural appropriation, revision of history or just appreciation of the culture. What are your thoughts on Yasuke in the new Assassin's Creed.

I mean his skin colour is very white because of the ashes of his family being on him
i must admit, it never crossed my mind,

The only thing I ever wondered is why he did not drown Atreus at birth.

There two answers from three groups:

- "It's a videogame, so what?" from the people who don't take videogames too seriously
- There's the one from people who somewhat know of Yasuke's history (some of them are multi-generational Japanese people)
- There's the anti-woke culture warrior answer from people who tends to lean into bigotry and/or ignorance

My honest opinion on this is it's assassin's creed , yes they take liberties with historical accuracy but to take the 1 case of a black man in feudal Japan & make him the protagonist is ridiculous especially when there's so little information of him written & there's so many actual Japanese people they could've used for their first 'historically accurate' protagonist , people saying everyone that doesn't like it are racist are ignorant , I loved assassin's creed origins playing as a black man in Egypt

Then what is it, then? Because I've ran through arguments accounting for "historical accuracy" when previous games were never close to being truly historically accurate, either, and no one was complaining then.

No one was complaining about the protagonist from Nioh, either, and that dude's not Japanese.

I'm still waiting for a good explanation from the people furious about it. I heard that Yusuke was the only playable character and that would have been a legitimate reason to be mad...except that's not true. You can play as Naoe as well.

Koei Tecmo a Japanese company made nioh , the character is based on William Adams the first Englishman to sail to japan who became hatamoto (High ranking samurai)

This is the type of shit that pisses people off lol

An unsourced article that cannot be found on google's first page (I can't even find it, period), written by an author that also does not show on google's first page (and I also cannot find this person).

That article might not be real actually but it wouldn't be surprising at all see kotaku or ign write something like that 🤣
So what you're saying is that some people are really pissed about a non-article?

Why are you replying to me , just looking at your profile picture shows you won't have a conversation about this in good faith

Who's "they"? And the "they" doing this somehow represent all of them?

Also the Nioh point you mentioned basically proves the point I'm trying to make: they could've picked a Japanese male samurai, but KT went "out of their way" to base the main lead off an Englishman. It was their first big action game in a long time, too. Where was the outrage?

I'm not even saying there should have been outrage. Some people probably think I'm trying to do a whataboutism there when I'm just showing the ridiculous outrage over Yusuke here would've been equally ridiculous over the Englishman character in Nioh.

What I'm asking is, why is there suddenly a hypocrisy when the game in question has a black samurai instead of an English samurai? And that's not even getting into the fact Nioh as well isn't exactly 100% historically accurate (as is no game based on historical events; again, artistic liberties are usually made in order to make those historical events, well, fun in the context of a video game).

I don't know what you mean when you say 'they' I never said that word in in what you're quoting & I was making a point that koei Tecmo are a Japanese company it's their culture where as ubsisoft is a french / Canadian company & the lead writer for this game is a white woman lol

What information was there written about a magically supercharged Rodrigo Borgia fighting a time traveller?

From your posts, it's obvious that you're ok with developers taking liberties with historical characters like Rodrigo Borgia and William Adams. For example, I don't remember it being recorded that Borgia had magical powers, but that's cool. I also assume you're ok with them having fictitious characters, considering you haven't mentioned massive issues with other games of the franchise. I also assume you're ok with main characters being people that were not typical in the environment they are portraid, as demonstrated by William Adams.

Considering you don't mind all of those, what's the problem?

Was talking about the tweet quoted on the "they" part, not you specifically.

As for the dev of one game being Japanese and the other being French, I don't necessarily see why that would matter. For me, that steeps into the stupid idpol talking points where only someone of that cultural background should be "allowed" to tell stories featuring that culture or aspects of that culture.

Quite frankly, that's an incredibly idiot thought that I know some far-leftist types conceptualized and push. But it's very ironic seeing far-right types try weaponizing the same idea to go after games like Shadows. I think if you're a real creative, you're not going to let your own cultural background prevent you from telling stories about other cultures or drawing inspiration from other cultures.

That's kind of the entire point of creating art (alongside creative expression). Something needed for entertainment. And also, Shadows could end up completely sucking as a game but I strongly doubt one of the leads being a black guy is going to be the reason for that, IF it happens.
