Cultural appropriation, revision of history or just appreciation of the culture. What are your thoughts on Yasuke in the new Assassin's Creed.

No, it's an actual caste. What you're thinking of is a romantic idea of a samurai. Just like the European knight. In truth, the samurai were no different than any other warrior throughout history in that they'd lie, cheat, steal and murder.

What makes them different is a fanatical devotion to their feudal lord. And here's the catch. While there was a code of honor, what that honor meant varied.

For example, it was forbidden for a samurai to steal. That would be a disgrace. But if that same samurai was ordered by his lord to do the same, then it's an honorable act.

There are a lot of romantic idea surrounding samurai. The truth is far more sobering. Entire armies switching sides during battle, etc.
You mean *was* an actual caste.

Of course, it’s a rich history.

We know why Ubisoft is doing this, but the closest thing we have to that energy now are old nationalist Japanese men. We don’t really know what the original samurai would’ve thought of this game.

You have rise of ronin, ghost of Tsushima, like a dragon isshin… you can play that.
Also, nioh protagonist is white, not Japanese.

What people don't seem to understand is that the problem isn't even that a black man was made to be the protagonist of a game set in 16th century Japan.

The problem is that we all know exactly why, in a 2024 release, a black man was made to be the protagonist. We know exactly what the motivations were and they have absolutely nothing to do with the character being interesting, or beloved by the Japanese (lol) or presenting an interesting viewpoint. That's completely bullshit.

We know what the motivations were because we know the kind of people pushing for these ideas are devoted to virtue signaling agendas. Here's a guy who just presented himself on X as a Senior Writer for the game:

This guy decided that the first Assassin's Creed game in Japan needed to have a black main character? Wow, how stunning and brave. Who could ever have seen this coming?

And you want to know an example of the "History consultants" working for Ubisoft on the game? One of them just gave an interview to IGN for an article that attempts to rewrite History to present Yasuke as a Samurai.

Man at the turn of 20th century we had people wanting to major in and become professors in advanced physics, quantum mechanics, organic chemistry and now we get fuckin gender studies and sexuality doctorates. Who fucking needs these, what does it even contribute

This is from the 90s, obviously written by a woke westerner specialised in gender studies.

This is from the 20's an animated by studio MAPPA, a known western animation studio filled with people of colour and females with rainbow hair

Yasuke_poster.jpg

And here's Yasuke in Samurai Warriors, a franchise known for it's evil wokism, sweet baby inc meddling, and of course produced by evil trans people

SW5-Yasuke-Reveal.jpg

And finally, who can excuse the woke culture warriors from Team Ninja for including Yasuke in their hit game Nioh? The mind rot is deep in the pink world of wokism!

Nioh 2 did this first and recently so Ubi once again being lame on that basis alone. Also a samurai? This was supposed to be a Ninja game but Ubi again had to be lame by copying Ghost of Tsushima.

Ok so how you make a game with a black character in 2024? I mean I get the gender and race swap controversy But this character existed, regardless if its pandering or not still an interesting character and how it should be done. Why you guys mad about this makes no sense whatsoever

It's 100% racist people being racist. Yasuke was a real person, was a real samurai, saw combat in service of the emperor.

Some people just don't like seeing black people. Then when called out they twist themselves into pretzels trying to justify it.

It ain't cultural appropriation either, as Japanese media has covered him fairly often. (also this claim is made by people who also say that 'cultural appropriation isn't a thing' so go figure)

Alright guys let's give legit opinions without the sarcasm, racist overtones, sarcastic shit throwing etc. This thread was just fine when it was created with ppl not being disrespectful or shit talking. If certain ppl can't handle these topics maturely than dont entertain them. Ppl can't be close minded there are valid pints on both sides.

Not commenting on the rest because my opinions are very well known and got me in trouble, but the whole cultural appropriation argument is such bullshit.

Every culture takes something out of other cultures, that's how they grow and change over time. Portuguese food is super heavy on spices that were originally Indian because we were essentially the first westerners to carve a maritime path there. Greek food has tons of North African influences because the Greeks and the Romans were culturally tied there. American cuisine staples only exist because they existed in Europe.

And so on. Sorry for the food examples but I'm hungry atm.

The road to november 15th is long, And Suicide Squad also finessed half a million suckers into pre orders. A publisher that hasn't released a single decent game in a decade will not suddenly make a must play game. There is a reason ubislop games are on discount within a month
Hmmm I just think the Japan take is more enticing for ppl. It's obvious they saw how well Nioh, GOT did etc and are riding tht wave hoping it's a seller.

Some people just don't like seeing black people.
Are you projecting or something?

Most people I see complaining about a black main character in AC Shadows have specifically mentioned Bayek in Origins and Aveline in Liberation as good examples of where to put black main characters - because their ethnicity made sense in their games' respective setting, just like every other AC game released so far.
Did you see any complaints about Bayek and Aveline when those games originally released?

Or rather, why are you so adamant in strawmaning? Is this like an achievement, to insult other people calling them racists? Or are you just ragebaiting?

Ok so how you make a game with a black character in 2024?

You do so without sUbVeRtInG eXpEcTaTiOnS, but that's the wrong question. The right question is:

- Why did the most anticipated Assassin's Creed setting (feudal Japan) have to bring a black samurai and a female ninja warrior (both of which never existed)?
(oops, I guess @anonpuffs is now going to accuse me of hating on women as well)

The road to your wishes not materialising also ends on the 15th of November.
