It's unfortunate it was 2k away from the all-time peak [314k vs 316k].

But still incredible performance, hope the actual content is better than LightFall.

Almost beat the all-time record on launch day. Concord is next 😅
Well concord atleast has a cool name and logo everything else oscillates between checkbox ticking to decent, although you don't piss of the rule 34 crowd if you make a hero shooter

Considering how huge of a stumble Lightfall was past its launch period, it is very encouraging to see a similar peak number just a year later. Long running games can have a particularly bad time period and recover quite easily, just don't have two mediocre updates in a row be badly received, especially if it's not seasons but rather fully fledged expansions.
That's when you get some real attrition, even from long time players.

Ehhhh longrunning games especially ones built on fomo treadmills and psychologically exploitative game design tend to weather badness okay. It took WoW almost a decade of being mediocre to terribad with broken promises for the player base to finally break, and it still has a lot of players.

Do you remember these 45% drop in revenue in a year that the Final Shape expansion was delayed?
Do you remember people saying Bungie was a bad deal?

Yeap… you are already open to see the revenue jumping way more these 45% drop in this FY?
Because that is what will happen.

The 45% drop only existed because FY23 had no expansion.

It was more than that. They had a similar drop in amount of players month to month for that whole year of Lightfall content.

So far I’m enjoying the campaign on legendary but there’s definitely connection issues slowing me down.

I think it should be known that campaign narrative completion won’t happen until after raid is done (and there may or may a quest or three more)

You always have drop month to month in Destiny until new expansion.
The 45% was only related to no new expansion released… remember Destiny expansion is released every year at full price ($70).

FY21 - The Witch Queen
FY22 - Lighfall
FY23 - Nothing
FY24 - Final Shape

It is obvious if you miss these millions of players paying $70 you will have a big drop in revenue.

For example 3 million at $70 means $210 million drop in revenue… and Destiny’s expansions sells way more than 3 million at launch.

You will see FY24 with Bungie revenue rising with triple digits percent.

It took 1 bad expansion(BFA)and a truly truly terrible one(Shadowlands) to have repercussions and generally the same pattern applies to other games as well. These games need two back to back big content drops/expansions for real damage to set in, it's kind of the rule of thumb tbh if you look at other long standing games as well.

WoW is a special case even among GaaS games though and its resilience is clear mostly due to be a 20 year old game.

Not only did it have two back to back expansions be extremely poor, but you had:
- Blizzard Scandal
- Bobby Kotick fucking up the relationship with NetEase and preventing their huge Chinese playerbase from playing legally.
- FFXIV was siphoning a huge amount of players.

Still can't be killed.

And these numbers are on a weekday..impressive!
They probably couldn't surpass the peak yesterday cause the servers were struggling (sort it out) and went offline.

another narrative in the gutter that Bungie is in trouble and failing.
Will Sony go 3 for 3 in 2024 with their live-service?
