this same timeframe last gen PS4 Slim was sold for $299, PS4 Pro for $399, at holiday periods, PS4 had $250 sales, at holiday 2018 Sony sold PS4 Slim + Marvel's Spiderman for $199

with PS5 sales slowing down compared to last year, will we see a price drop this year for the slim model? with the release of PS5 Pro in November, i can see PS5 + Disc for $399 and Discless PS5 for $349

agree, will be very difficult to surpass PS4 if they don't have a more competitive price, 450/500 is still too much for a 2020 console, 4 years into the gen already, time for price drops

i think this year we'll see an internal revision for PS5, with 4nm Slim models, it will get cheaper to manufacture

Yes. Prices needs to be going down at this point in the generation but node shrinks aren’t what it used to be.

node shrinks aren't going to knock off $100 off a console. Needs a smaller form factor and less metal on the heatsink, less plastic.

$299 ain't gonna happen. $399 is a maybe.

Without any games to look forward to, a relatively mild output until now and PC ports galore, a price drop might be the only possibility to gain some momentum.

That's what I'm trying to say. With a node shrink, the entire system consumes less power, the cooling system gets smaller, the entire system becomes smaller as well. This results in more chips being produced per wafer, which ultimately reduces the cost of the SoC. However, smalle nodes are currently not worth it due to high demand from other customers, which in turn increases the cost and makes it impractical.

That's why the PS5 is not going down in price any time soon like the PS4, PS3, PS2, and PS1 did at this point of their respective generations.

I think their cooling solution is way overbuilt, probably because they took the 'jet engine" criticisms against the ps4 personally. But if they're willing to let the console get a little louder I think they definitely could bring the cooling solution down. The base console only draws 200w. That's not very much.

Yes they need a price drop. £499 four years into a generation is a fucking piss take. Launching at £450 was bad enough from both camps, then to raise prices and not lower them? They can get fucked.

Imagine paying £499 for a four year old console. Even the PS3 was more affordable by year 4. They are so out of touch it's unbelievable.

PC ports for singleplayer are the worst part, it takes away a lot of the value from the box, but people building PCs generally have a lot more money than the casual console player, so i don't think it has a huge effect out of our hardcore space

the smaller the chip, the smaller the cooling solution, that's why i think 4nm PS5 will happen at the end of this year, specially if the rumours of PS5 Pro using 4nm chips are true, will get the cost of the PS5 Slim lower because everything is reduced once the chip gets a revision

depends if the savings offsets the cost of tape-out, which can be tens of millions of dollars, or even more on the more advanced nodes.
