Yes they do, why do you think they can't let go of them? You think those studios actually want to work on the same IP forever?

I never said they have great success with their IPs, just that they value established IPs too much.

Sony can easily move on from moderately successful franchises like Infamous, Resistance while MS can't let go of stuff like State of Decay, Crackdown, Gears and Halo that are going nowhere.
Well I have a different view... I think MS kills most of their IPs... they have basically no value to them.
Sony is the opposite they care about the IP sometimes even too much... so they keep creating more games for that IP and even rebooting old IPs.

MS kills most of their studios but they are always committed to the same IPs, they are still trying to bring Fable back when the studio that made the games has been closed years and year ago. MS couldn't even let go of the Hellblade/Outer Worlds/Pillars of Eternity IPs that they got when they bought those studios.

MS attempts at creating new IPs are usually low risk/low budget efforts.

Maybe Sony might have seen some regulatory issues incoming, if they also bought SE's non-japanese studios.
IMO I think there is more to do with the profit that these studios where not giving.
I'm sure if Eidos was profitable to Square Enix... Sony or even Square Enix should never let they go.

The issue was that these western studios were dragging Square Enix down.

Coincidence or not... after they sold them Square Enix back to focus in Japanese games... new IPs, remasters, remakes, etc... it seems to be working pretty well.

Yea it sounds like maybe them selling off those other studios and IP was to trim the fat for a Sony purchase. For all we know, they are currently in talks to buy them and that move might have been part of it to make the purchase more attractive for Sony.

Its sounding very likely that Sony might indeed buy Square now.

I would have preferred for Sony to keep the other IP's... Deus Ex and Legacy of Kain in particular.

But if they do buy Square with FF, KH, DQ, Nier etc, I will be quite happy.

Plus I think they should buy the Konami IP's after that.
So your end goal is to sell all Japanese Studios becoming a single company? :D

Maybe not things that are being run well already.... so Capcom for instance are doing great, I dont think anyone needs to buy them.

However Konami is not doing much f anything with their IP's.

I also think Arc System Works could be massive if Sony bought them and made a Marvel fighting game and Anime allstars fighting game.

Industry consolidation isn’t a great thing. However if this is what many studios must do to evolve, survive and grow. It is what it is. Especially when vultures lurk. The only thing that I appreciate is that over the years Sony has cultivated some quality stuff and upped its brand. It’s not quite at Nintendo level but it’s damn close.

So when something like square… that I feel has put out way too many stinkers over the years with its supposed pedigree may benefit from Sony’s influence.

Final Fantasy 16 has me sold however. Looks like it’s gonna be a turning point for the series for the better.

I'd have kept even the studios.

They are very talented, only needed more money, marketing and non-dumb managers who would believe in them, who would let work properly, who wouldn't take dumb decisions and who wouldn't set unrealistic sales expectations. I think their western studios would have done a way better job in Sony than what they did until now and what they'll do at Embracer.

I assume Square Japan and London wanted to get rid of them independently if selling the rest of the company or not. And in the case of Sony, maybe wanted to "clean" a bit Square Enix to avoid potential future money pits as that these them had several times and also avoid potential future fights between these studios and the other part of Square. And on top of that having less IPs/studios/workers the acquisition price lowers, so maybe by doing that they can approach to acquire them with the available budget they had for big SIE acquisitions for this year (maybe combined with other ones they may be ready).

Konami has an insane catalog of old classics, some successful IPs they could use today for big or small games and also movies/tv shows/anime/etc. But I think Sony already has a lot of unused IPs, so even if I think it would be great to buy great IPs, I think it's more important for Sony to buy talent who can develop IPs they already have. Or that if they buy someone who has IPs, I think it would be better to buy companies with the talent to develop them (plus to make new ones).

I'd prefer them and I'd think would be better for them to go for Capcom after (or before) Square Enix, because it would help Sony dominate/become a key player in more genres and niches, plus also could learn about them for more things.

This guy hasn't worked for Eidos in almost a decade. SMH.

But if Sony does acquire a publisher, my money would be on Square Enix as they seem to be a perfect fit.
You're in for a rude awakening xbot:) Sony is acquiring MULTIPLE publishers and you can quote me on that:)

microsoft kept poking the sleeping bear, they fooked around and found out. Sony upped their aquistions budget to 30bill for a reason!!! And Sony is planning to raise it even higher now!

If microsoft can get Call of Duty, than Sony can get GTA...or Fortnight - or both. Fair is fair:)

Anyway, remember how much you denied Sony buying Square Enix because "too much work force," than I pointed out to you, "why do you think SE sold off their western branch?" Time to eat your crow. You were so arrogant in your xbot delusions. Time to eat your crow and admit you know nothing about nothing, and are just an xbox corporate cheerleader!

In fact, I believe Sony HAS already acquired SE. Which is why Sony sold off the western branch for pennies to Embracer whos close with Sony....because it was all about not letting micorsoft get the western branch...so Sony let a close multiplatform partner get them for the good of gaming and gamers

It's just a matter of waiting for the announcement now. It took Sony quite awhile to announce bluepoint even though Sony bought them way beforehand. In fact, Sony buying Sqaure Enix is already old news to me. I'm excited for the next publisher Sony is about to buy

The serpent microsoft has finally ran into a mongoose

ps
microsoft investors are pissed that they aren't getting the returns they expected on all the investments they have been pouring into the xbox brand which continues to be a big loss leader. Microsoft shareholders are known for being ruthless - they expect immediate return always - xbox is in deep trouble and all hell is about to break loose within microsoft with infighting

No rude awakening for me. I own PS5. Doesn't change anything for me. And outside of FF, SE sold off the two studios I cared about so if Sony wants to waste their money on SE, that's up to them. With that said, I stand by what I previously said - Sony will NOT ACQUIRE any major third party publisher.

But we'll see. And P.S. - a Merger is not the same thing as an acquisition. Just want to say this ahead of time.

Well, maybe that explains why SE is selling their other studios for peanuts. Even then, why does Sony hate Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal so much?
Sony doesn't "hate" anyone. They are a buisness doing what's best for them. There was no point in having Crystal Dynamics/Tomb Raider when they already have the far superior Uncharted. It's like a team who already has a prime Michael Jordan, "but you need to trade for a bench warming guard who's worse than Jordan in every way! Wha wha wha, why don't you want that bench warmer who I demand you get?" BECAUSE THEY ALREADY HAVE MICHAEL JORDAN lol.. You feel me

And Edios Montreal didnt really have any talent that's worth it, as only the hardcores hype up games like Dues Ex etc.

And by cutting off the fat, Sony was able to cut costs, better manage, and just digest the pure meat they wanted

Would be great, also even if Sony will allow DQ to go to Nintendo consoles, it will at least guarantee a PS lead game. Won't have to suffer for limitation like DQ11 case.

If only this were true... some of my favorite Sony IP has been dead for many years now.
