You may have seen in the news recently that Microsoft has overtaken Apple in becoming "the world's most valuable company", and Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney has had something to say on the matter. Sweeney has congratulated the Xbox owner for its achievement, while making a not-so-subtle dig at some of the competition.

More specifically, the Epic CEO says the way Apple and Google operate is "a sharp contrast" to how Microsoft "empowers developers to do great work". Here's Sweeney's statement in full:

"Congratulations to Microsoft on a well-deserved honor. From Bill Gates to Steve Ballmer to Satya Nadella, they have a 50-year track record of supporting and empowering developers to do great work, while respecting developer and user freedom. A sharp contrast to Apple and Google."

To be honest, we're not surprised to see this at all. A few years ago, Epic was fighting the two mobile companies in court - and Microsoft actually supported Epic's endeavour at the time. Evidently, the Fortnite creator prefers the way Microsoft does business in the gaming world!

Anyway, we suppose it's good news for Xbox in some fashion that Microsoft is now top of the capitalism tree. As long as Microsoft keeps investing in gaming, we're happy!

"Microsoft" and "respecting developer and user freedom" in the same sentence.

@Old Gamer you been around as long as me lol and you know this is bs. Microsoft started repeating Sony talking points about ten years ago and I remember one year Sony devs, media and articles talked so much about Sony empowering devs and giving them free vision in projects and being hands off, the next year Microsoft PR went to work and started parroting the same shit. Their lack of originality is baffling. If anything they were known to micromanage and hinder devs.

I mean...he's not really wrong. Microsoft lack originality sure but they also want their stuff available to as many people as possible. It's Xbox that don't, despite preaching otherwise

Hmmm like your distinction between Microsoft as a company and Xbox as a division. Good point.

Actually I just hear good things from people that works at Microsoft here in Brazil.
Good conditions.
Good bonuses.
Flexible work time (it is attached to delivery and not working hours).
Good health plans.
Etc.

In 2020 they won the award Greatest Place to Work in Brazil.

He's absolutely right, and by developers he's talking about Windows developers and not Xbox game developers. Windows is the largest open platform ever made, you can install anything you want and use your own stores and payment systems. He's leaving out the myriad of anti trust litigation that it took to get them to that point but it's true nonetheless.

I don't think "open platform" clarifies anything given that #1: it's absolutely a proprietary platform #2: there's no possibility to modify for specialized use-cases (see SteamOS).

Hmm, any program can run on Windows, for free. In that sense it is open to developers of third party "applications" aka programs, such as Epic. But no, its not Gnu-style open where you can see and modify the base code of Windows itself.

right, and "open" in the context of "open source" was already an intentionally business-friendly framing designed to confuse and water down Free Software principles.
