Update 3/25

We recently interviewed Final Fantasy XVI staff at PAX East 2024, namely producer Naoki Yoshida and DLC director Takeo Kujiraoka, discussing the upcoming The Rising Tide DLC while reflecting on the development process of Final Fantasy XVI as a whole.

Interestingly, in response to our question about how the team will feel saying goodbye to the cast after The Rising Tide DLC is released, Yoshida said that they are thinking about moving to other platforms after the PC port. Of course, the natural assumption is that he’s referring to porting Final Fantasy XVI to Xbox.

It’s worth noting that Yoshida did not elaborate on this point further, and based on his wording, this plan may not be set in stone yet, so it’s best to temper expectations.

While Yoshida is unable to share when the PC version of FFXVI will be released, he says the team is in the last stages of optimization.

"In terms of where we are in development currently, we're trying to figure out the final stages of optimization right now," Yoshida tells me through a translator. "When we can release the PC version might be dependent on that – the system requirements and specifications for PC that players will need, so we're trying to figure that out. Naturally, [the PC specifications] are looking to be somewhat high."

Another example that PC port is not just a magical slider option.
It takes times.

Even in multiplatform releases you need to have a main team that works in the main platform and others sub teams that do the port to others platforms.

Porta increase developer costs because it needs more people working in these projects as sub teams.

Extremely low expectations for this game. But let's see if they work alongside Nvidia like they did with FFXV so at least it's decent technically.

Not-very-smart people:

"PC version is already done, because PS5 is just a PC!"

"It's only delayed because of Sony moneyhat!"

"They will release the PC port as soon as the exclusivity period ends"

100% true look at Atlus and their games now. Originally Playstation focused (Persona) they would have little bits of cosmetic dlc to buy or summons for a relatively affordable price. Now chose to go the multiplatform route and we're getting expansions that are released a month after for a large price increase on top of the Persona 6 rumor of having separate expansion passes. This was never a thing from them until they went multiplat.

Look like it will probably be within a few months with a trial version to precede it. They're doing optimization, bug testing and nailing down system requirements.

It appears there will be several different versions with varying levels of DLC included.

Iphone 16, switch 2, mac, possibly xbox. Sony literally wasted 4 billion on bungie when they couldve spent that on SE. All of bungies projects have been cancelled and theyve released one dlc. Total waste of money.

I also want to add that this guy yoshi p undermines the current version of whatever platform theyre pushing. When it was ps5, he mentioned pc, now its pc and hes undermining that version. They need to tell him to talk less.

Switch 2 will help sales, if Nintendo make something competent tech wise to be able to play it

Smarter people:

"A PC version is done since all modern game dev is done on PC, but only for a very narrow hardware spec mimicking the PS5. Needs a small dev team to take that version and flesh it out for full PC compatibility, additional options, wider hardware support, ultrawide support, QOL features, etc"

"It's partly delayed because of Sony moneyhat"

"They will release the PC port some time after the exclusivity period ends, whenever it makes the most business sense to the people making the decision on it."

I think Nintendo should be very perceptive about FF16 coming to their new console, as the franchise itself was born in Nintendo consoles and it would be a nice comeback to signal Nintendo extending their hand to 3rd party developers.

However, this is what I think Nintendo should do, not what I think Nintendo will do. They seem to not give a rat's ass about 3rd party developers.

Just look at what Nintendo just did. They casually delayed the Switch 2 by half a year because they thought they didn't have enough of their own games ready on time. And this meant that all the 3rd parties making games on time for the Switch 2's release date are going to lose on all holidays sales numbers, not to mention being starved of revenue for months.
