Buggy mess incoming? joking armored core looked pretty stable and solid.

If BG3 and Starfield turn out to be great then a studio size past 500 devs is just bloated.
Thts all dependent on scope, quality and the quality of ppl hired. I would agree 500 plus is bloat. We've literally seem decent sized games with high metas helped by only a few dozen ppl.

Not always, it depends.....Insomniac has a bit over 500 developers but they're very efficient with several games in rotation and consistent release cycles

I mentioned those 2 specifically because they both have enormous scope and are being made by studios with a sub-500 dev count. Comparatively, we have CP77 where CDPR grew way too fast(300 - 1100 in 5yrs), probably creating a logistical nightmare for themselves, and they couldn't deliver on their promise.

I mean it shows, elden ring's greatest qualities are things that don't take a lot of work. They reused a lot of animations from older games, the asset quality isn't super high or varied, game performance is janky.
Tons of copypasta and automated "content". I'm absolutely sure that they used their Chalice randomaizer to generate caves and catacombs in ER.

A lotta of outsourcing. They outsourced a lot of assets work to SEA regions.

Also it's not that hard if you are working in Japan and can live under your working table.

Whats the alternative? 2 billion dollar budgets and 10 year development times like GTA6?

there doesnt need to be an alternative, from is doing exceptionally well in their lane. in a few years AI tools will be of a level that any game will have high quality assets.

Best pound for pound dev out there and a great acquisition target.

FromSoftware with actual great technical knowhow and budget would be something unmatched.
