GAAS is a necessary evil for Playstation

The problem is also the lack of investment on traditional games. They need to invest a lot more just to keep what we have going due to the nature of making games.

Not to mention that they need new things coming up consistently to keep things fresh. Right now most of their studios will spend years working on sequels and we'll have one or two shots at new IPs this gen.
And there's the real kicker. They simply need more studios. Xbox can out release them if they actually start trying. They can't afford to have ND spend years on a project they're not suited for, only to cancel it and start over.

I also said it before, things change, there is no guarantee that Xbox will suck forever. They could replace Phil Spencer with someone competent and start getting more out of all their studios.

Sony is weirdly trying to become what destroyed Xbox, it makes no sense to me. They are not trying to become Nintendo or Valve, for some reason they feel like following Xbox.

Does Nintendo have any GaaS? They seem to have very traditional multiplayer games fighting game, kart racing, paint shooter and the thirds are left to fight with Fortnite to see who's the king of generic zoomer GaaS.
Yes, you think those Smash DLCs were free?

Mario Kart, Smash Bros and Splatoon all fit gaas and have been monetized to hell and back. Support may have ended for these games but they’re not doing much different. Street fighter 2 is the OG.

No one is worse than Nintendo with gouging its customers. They tie DLC to rare amiibo on top of it. They got two generations out of the same Mario kart games. All they did was add to it.

It’s an issue of semantics. Returning players and ongoing revenues have many forms. Gaas implies further longevity to content support. How long? Has it been defined? Probably ballpark 5 years plus.

Burning Shores just released
Spider-Man 2 is coming up
Helldivers 2 is coming up

For third party partnerships, we have
Silent Hill 2 coming up
FF16 is right around the corner

A bunch more ahead

So again, what's rational about the concerns we're seeing all of a sudden?
Spiderman 2 was known about since 2021
Helldivers 2 looks good and I'll play it but let's be real, it's not on the level
Silent hill 2 ... are you really gassing up a bloober team title?
FF16 is already on preorder and as soon as FF7R part 2 is available that is as well.
But you can't be serious. You can't even name the "a bunch more ahead" because we don't know anything about them. For all we know they're a bunch of gaas games that will get cancelled or rebooted like the one from deviation just did.

I don't know, to me there is a clear difference between stuff like Fortnite/Farigame$/Hyenas/Destiny and a regular multiplayer game with some DLC.

So you can't name the difference

If you don't have the sensibility to differentiate between GaaS trash and a regular multiplayer game it's not my problem.

Easy. GAAS is a game that is designed to keep pumping money from you as you play. It doesn't have to be multiplayer even, plenty of gaas are single player (mobile games with collectathon elements). The elements that keep you paying range from content dlc like maps, levels, weapons, items, cosmetics, unlockable inventories, to more ephemeral things like consumables, "speakerphones", player housing, etc. And the most predatory forms include gambling and chance mechanics like lootboxes or gacha.

Multiplayer is just a game you can play with more than one player.

The sad thing is that I know that in a few years the same geniuses going out of their way to defend this failed GaaS strategy will pretend they always knew it wasn't going to work.

What multiplayer game that doesn't have these these elements? GAAS is just a catch all term for multiplayer games that have further content drops and monetisation.

plenty of multiplayer games don't have these elements. You just don't see them, because corporations are quick to promote the things that squeeze you dry. Cuphead has no mtx. Souls games have multiplayer and no mtx. It takes two was GoTY, co-op and no mtx. Returnal has multiplayer co-op and no mtx. Sackboy has couch co-op and no mtx. Then you have competitive games like AoE2 and starcraft 2 with no mtx. They are out there, you just have to stop accepting microtransactions as a default.

Like it or not, Sony needs a successful GAAS. Maybe multiples

Game development is only getting more expensive with a ceiling on revenue from single player games. That margin between profitability and failure will only diminish over time. Soon enough games will need to sell 10 million just to break even.

GAAS may not be the games we play but they can be the safety net that can keep PlayStation Studios well funded into the future

Right now Sony is in the precarious position where a lot of revenue comes from third party GAAS success, where they only make 30% and where COD can be directly attributed to helping fund PlayStation Studios

And all of that is at more and more risk as Microsoft buys up publishers

Just one to two major hits for GAAS will be a game changer. Single player bangers are what we buy the systems for but GAAS will be what keeps the lights on
Yes, not sure who but I think Jimbo or Hermen said something like this, that costs in AAA were getting bigger but sales and pricing didn't grow at the same time, so they had to find new revenue sources to fund them and have a bigger safety net plus cash to continue expanding.

And part of that was the reason of why they were growing not only in traditional games, but with GaaS, PC, mobile, cinema and tv adaptations.

Here's some market context, notice how add-ons (dlc/IAP/passes) revenue is replacing game sales revenue and particularly in console, and also how mobile is growing while the console market revenue stays basically flat (even if mobile last year decreased for the first time after skyrocketing during many years, maybe peaked):

Sony first party was covery many fronts with their console first party titles, but MP, shooters and GaaS weren't part of them. They had a growth opportunity there, and also in PC and mobile. So they are going for it, while continuing with their focus on Playstation and also betting more on non-GaaS SP titles than before both 1st and (AAA and indie) 3rd party.

They have alot of GaaS already. Destiny, GT, MLB, Marathon, and Fairegame. That's it. Enough.
Now also Concord and Helldivers 2.

Pretty sure of those 12, like 5 of them are just new iterations of MLB, plus Destiny expansions
They are 12 different franchises according to this Sony graph from last year, so even if during this period they release multiple MLB titles they would count as 1 in this list:

With the delays and at least the Deviation one getting apparently canned or rebooted I assume several of them won't release before March 2026 as originally planned.
