Some games will switch to player-based match making once the dev/pub devices the server cost isn't effective anymore. I'm speaking out of my depth here and can't remember the example I used to use, but it's deffinately been done.

I think all games should sunset their servers if needed, but then release a final patch to rejigger all the match making code to point to player setup servers. I still don't understand why this isn't rolled into PS+ Sub or something. Sony shut down Warhawk/Starhawk? Lemme buy PS+ Premium for a month, "spin up some idle servers", and host a tournament for my friends these next couple of weekends.

I've had Haha reactions in the past, someone explain to me why such an idea wouldn't be a boon for Sony to pursue and successfully market to customers?
